Cinema. Our cathedral in the dark for watching the lives of others flashing on a screen in hopes of a resonant echo, self-recognition, escape, catharsis, trying to make sense of this crazy world. One sometimes has to question the beings who would rather spend their time with fictional people in an unreal story instead of the real flesh and blood thing. But in the dark, sometimes, together we transcend our stations, and for a fleeting two hours, if we’re lucky, can be transported to a place that’s moving, poignant, and maybe even magical.

Another year, another fifty lists. There were a lot of truly terrific movies to come out in 2012 and it was difficult to sit down and whittle away at a list that contained 30+ films that warranted special acknowledgement. Eventually you have to go with your gut, and I admit that this list may look different in a year, a month, a week, maybe even a day -- but these are the films that really stood out, the ones that had an especially resonant strength.

When it first began, many, many years ago, The Playlist covered film in general, but with a particular focus on the places where movies intersected with music -- scores, soundtracks, music videos et al. And while our remit has grown over time, it's still something we take a particular interest in. After all, it's hard to think of major movies in which music doesn't play a key part, from a piece of score elevating a key sequence to a pop song that becomes inextricably linked with a film until the end of time.

Rick Alverson had been making fantastic films before 2012, but this year thrust him into the conversation with the odd, discomforting “The Comedy.” Starring Tim Heidecker of 'Tim & Eric' (and featuring a whole slew of other interesting people, including James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem) as Swanson, an eternal Brooklynite and juvenile faced with the imminent death of his father. Though a large amount of responsibility (and inheritance) are coming his way, he’d rather spend his time shooting the shit with friends or provoking total strangers with his own brand of confrontational humor. Alverson’s movie assays the numbness that comes with comfort and questions the very nature of comedy; it is both a funny and perturbing portrait of a man who just doesn’t know when to quit (or, even sadder, of a man who quit long ago).

Steven Spielberg releases his bait this weekend in limited release, a number of festival darlings (and stinkers, incidentally; but, hey, everything needs a little balance) hit the big screen, and one of Hollywood’s most time-tested blockbuster franchises gets its 23rd installment. "Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie" and Rick Alverson's "The Comedy" (starring Tim Heidecker) both played at the Sundance Film Festival, and it'd be easy to simply peg the former as your standard bizarre T&E affair and the latter as a dramatic arthouse effort. But that's simply much too reductive for Alverson's current character study, a film uniquely weird in its own right and filled with enough of the duo's humor to make their followers happy -- to a point.

The movie title "The Comedy" is a bit of a subterfuge. While the movie is led by "Tim & Eric" comedian Tim Heidecker, and features his buddy Eric Wareheim, LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy and more, the movie itself is more of a deconstruction of the genre and perhaps of a lifestyle. Taking irony and provocoative humor to task, the movie is a challenging look at one man adrift as he contemplates his future. And the soundtrack is appropriately moody.
