Cannes Review: Ari Folman's Part-Animated 'The Congress' Is Overstuffed And Overwritten, But Sort Of Fascinating

Ari Folman's "The Congress" aka "Robin Wright at The Congress" aka "Reviewer's Nightmare" (last title mine) opens the director's fortnight at Cannes this evening and screened for a group of alternately beguiled and baffled press this morning. Evoking Miyazaki and perhaps on-form Gilliam in its best moments, and lurching oddly into "Southland Tales" territory in its worst, it is a film we'd be happy to call a fascinating muddle, were it not a little overstretched to really support even that summation. At the very least, however, should your copy of "Pink Floyd's The Wall" have worn out through overuse, we can see "The Congress" having a similar kind of life as a late-night stoner mindfuck.

The long, long wait for "Waltz With Bashir" director Ari Folman's next effort "The Congress" is now nearly over. Whilst we're still surprised that the director, who was in contention for a Palme d'Or in the main competition at Cannes in 2008 with 'Bashir,' has been relegated to the Directors' Fortnight sidebar (perhaps "Seduced And Abandoned" has already filled the 'Hollywood skewering' Cannes slot,) there is little doubt that this is going to be one to track down. The first trailer alone promises a head-spinning experience.

Cannes 2013, header
With the actual schedule released today (cue charts and diagrams as attendees try to work out how to be in eight places at one time), the final pieces are falling into place for this year's Cannes Film Festival, and it's shaping up to be a terrific couple of weeks. The initial lineup was already impressive, but the addition of a couple of titles we were surprised not to see in the original announcement has made the selection even more an embarrassment of riches. As such, we were hard pressed to pick a top ten, but finally settled on the following choices, that, along with the honorable mentions, we feel represent the strongest of what is a very solid lineup. It should be noted that there's a great showing by the U.S. in this selection, as there is for French-language movies, which is reflective of the festival overall. With Steven Spielberg the head of the Cannes Competition jury too, it feels like Franco-American relations are at an all-time high, cinematically speaking at least.

Yesterday, the 2013 Cannes Film Festival lineup was formally announced, and among the titles selected were a few that surprised us, while we noted others that seemed like eye-opening omissions. And today comes word of one filmmaker who is going from competing in the main line up at Cannes, to opening one of the sidebar slates of programming.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" would open this year's Cannes Film Festival, still the most prestigious, and arguably most important event on the cinematic calendar. And today, March 14th, marks the last day on which films can be seen by the selection panel for the festival, which kicks off May 15th.

A movie that has literally been years in the making, showing of some early footage way back in 2010, "Waltz With Bashir" director Ari Folman's followup "The Congress" has been coming along at a steady, if unhurried pace. While we've had glimpses here and there, a batch of new images have arrived giving the best look yet at how the live action/animated film will be coming together.

Ari Folman has been steadily moving forward with “The Congress,” his animated, sci-fi followup to “Waltz With Bashir.” The director unveiled some early footage last year at the Cartoon Movie Symposium in Lyons, France and has Robin Wright long attached to star, with Kodi Smit-McPhee revealing last month that he had joined the project as well.
