Brad Pitt, The Counselor
Yep, it was in 3,336 theaters, stars Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz (among myriad other names), was directed by Ridley Scott and written by celebrated American author Cormac McCarthy, but 20th Century Fox's "The Counselor" flopped despite all that star power. We can't say we're totally surprised. Sure, it had the now infamous catfish scene, cheetahs, a terribly awful (or terribly good) Cameron Diaz as an evil black widow with cheetah tattoos, drug deals, beheadings, and more sordidness, but Scott's film—a blisteringly dark, acidic poem about fate, greed and the way we communicate—was just too arty and talky for mainstream audiences (and perhaps too mainstream for the arthouse).

Ridley Scott, The Counselor
While this weekend's two notable releases--“Blue is the Warmest Color” and Ridley Scott's “The Counselor”--had us contemplating the explicit and aberrant examples in film from years past, it should be noted that the “Gladiator” director could've brought both to the big screen in a big way--if only a studio would touch it. He's still made history by making Cormac McCarthy's first original screenplay into a chatty and not entirely successful oddity, but in a recent interview, Scott touched briefly on his quashed adaptation of the author's best known and most grisly work.

12 Celebrated Novelists Turned Screenwriters And How They Fared
There was a time when everyone wore hats and screenwriting was a lot less respectable a specialization for a writer than it is today. Stories of “legitimate” authors and playwrights doing the “Barton Fink” and selling out to Hollywood were nearly as legion as the tales of their boorish mistreatment once there: the studios that commodified their creativity, the honchos who more or less paid for words by the pound, the seismic shift between being the author of a finished piece of work, however underappreciated, and being regarded as one pair of hands on an assembly line. It’s no wonder that for a while there, Hollywood became a bogeyman to authors and the adage that screenwriters were little more than failed novelists was born. After all, who but a failed writer would put themselves through such debasement?

The Counselor
Michael Fassbender is sexy like a shark, and sleek as a sports car. His chin is chiseled and hard, forever confident, but his smile is subterranean, hiding secrets we could never guess. As compelling an actor he is, perhaps there’s almost too much depth to this classically pretty face, one that cannot help but come across as predatory, salacious. He’s an unlikely choice to be a wronged man in the middle of a suspense thriller, and yet here he is, apparently meant to be likable and relatable at the center of Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy’s reptilian “The Counselor.”

15 Weird & Disturbing Sex Scenes
Let’s get this out of the way, right off the bat: there will be mild spoilers here—but these spoilers have already been posted online and not by us. Got that? I mean, we all read the Internetz, so… Anyhow, Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” opens in theaters this weekend. Written by venerable American author Cormac McCarthy, “The Counselor” stars Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt as its principal cast. The picture is a morality drama about a greedy lawyer (Fassbender), who finds himself in over his head when he decides to delve into the dark world of drug trafficking. Shit backfires and things go way south for said attorney.

The Counselor
If you still need a Halloween costume idea then might we suggest going as Javier Bardem in "The Counselor"? From the loud hair to the even louder shirts, his role as Reiner in the Cormac McCarthy penned thriller looks like one for the ages, or at the very least for this weekend.

5 Michael Fassbender Films You May Not Have Seen
Michael Fassbender has had a good run of it these past few years. It's a hot streak (one which saw him the recipient of the "staggering honor" that was Playlist Man of the Year 2011) that looks set to continue with the Irish/German actor moving between critically adored arthouse films and broad-appeal tentpoles with ease, often for directors who he's impressed before. Obviously, right now he can be seen reuniting with "Hunger" and "Shame" director Steve McQueen on the Oscar-tipped "12 Years A Slave," while this week also seems him back with "Prometheus" helmer Ridley Scott in the Cormac McCarthy-penned "The Counselor." Next year will again see him do the indie/tentpole one-two: in Lenny Abrahamson's "Frank" (the director previously cast Fassbender in a Mastercard commercial before either had made the real leap to features), before he returns as Magneto in "X-Men: Days of Future Past."

Can Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" finally usurp Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" from the top of the box office this weekend? Certainly, it's got a killer cast—Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz and lots more—and it also has Cameron Diaz....having sex....with a car. Yes, really.

The Counselor
With just over a week to go before it hits theaters, Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" is still kind of a big, fat question mark. Even with the steady promotional push, which has included clips and previews of the soundtrack (click here if you missed it yesterday), what kind of movie we're in for is still a bit up in the air. An Oscar caliber, dark drama like "No Country For Old Men"? A sizzling piece of noir pulp? Something in between? We still don't know but perhaps these new images will help.

The Counselor
While Daniel Pemberton prepares to make his biggest splash yet as a feature film composer, with Ridley Scott's "The Counselor," he's been popping up on the right radars elsewhere for a while now. He's an Ivor Novello award winner and multi-BAFTA nominated composer who has done work extensively on TV, tuned up the Rebecca Hall chiller "The Awakening" and even worked on video games such as "Little Big Planet" and "Kinetic." But the Cormac McCarthy penned thriller is certainly his biggest opportunity and he's seized it with both hands.
