10 Films To See In October
You could be inclined to believe October is just like any other month, especially since there’s only one major horror movie set for wide release to scare your pants off on Halloween. Sadly this must-see slate of ten won’t sate your bloodlust, but it does feature awards-contenders, smart indies and survival thrillers that will have you grabbing the person closes to you. And moreover, these are ten good movies that we think are worthy of your time and money over the next thirty days. So let's dive right in....

Michael Fassbender, The Counselor
We’re just under a month away from Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” and the anticipation is mounting. That tends to happen when you’re working from Cormac McCarthy’s first original screenplay and working with a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Penelope Cruz, and Cameron Diaz. While we wait to hear word of any screenings—the film’s skipped out on any festival appearances thus far—a new clip has arrived online and it name-checks a certain tough guy actor.

Even though we're just about a month away from Ridley Scott's "The Counselor," it's still held under a bit of a veil of mystery. With no festival appearances to boost the buzz, and limited promo material, the star-studded thriller based on a script by Cormac McCarthy still has a lot kept under wraps. But today, a further peek at one of the characters provides a small preview of what's to come.

The Counselor, Michael Fassbender
One of the pleasures to be had from Ridley Scott's upcoming thriller "The Counselor," we're assuming, is watching Michael Fassbender squirm. The film, based on the first original screenplay from "No Country for Old Men" author Cormac McCarthy, concerns a lawyer (Fassbender) who gets involved in drug trafficking and, we're assuming, has to try and extract himself without winding up very, very dead. In a new clip we watch Fassbender talking with Javier Bardem, with a fake tan and hypnotically spiky plume of hair, about just how bad his situation has gotten. Watch it below.

2013 Fall Film Preview, Her, American Hustle, Counselor
With this week feeling, release-wise, a little like the industry at large is taking a deep breath while effecting the gear change from Summer tentpole scheduling to awards season programming, it’s a good moment to pause and take a look at the goodies to come in the waning months of 2013. It’s a pretty stellar lineup, as films we've seen throughout the festival year start to make their way into awards-friendly end-of-year slots, vying with films we haven't yet seen but have been patiently, and in some cases pantingly, looking forward to for months now. In fact the lineup is so stellar that for the purposes of whittling down a manageable list of the films we're most anticipating, we made the decision to exclude anything that features in our Most Anticipated Toronto Internatioal Film Festival list just to narrow the field a little.

Brad Pitt, The Counselor
When it comes to "The Counselor," Ridley Scott's new movie that's based on "No Country for Old Men" author Cormac McCarthy's first original screenplay, there seems to be no middle ground: it's either going to be amazing or utterly unwatchable. We've watched, in a kind of hushed fascination, as each new trailer and image has debuted from the movie: will this all jell into something rich and dazzling, like the Ridley Scott of yore, or will it be a spectacular disaster, like an air show crash or "A Good Year." With the movie's October release date fast approaching, we'll know soon enough. And a handful of new images, plus a new poster, continue our wide-eyed appreciation.

The Counselor, Brad Pitt
Already dreading the end of "Breaking Bad" in six weeks or so? It looks like Ridley Scott might have something to cure what ails you. It's relatively unlikely that Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Cormac McCarthy was inspired by the popular and acclaimed series, given that he's been writing about the cross-border world of drugs and gruesome murder for some time (most famously with the source material for the Coen Brothers' "No Country For Old Men"), but it's hard to watch the new UK trailer for "The Counselor" (or, to use the UK spelling on this trailer, "The Counsellor")—an original script by McCarthy, directed by Scott—and not find echoes of Walter White & co, especially when this new clip gives a glimpse of Dean Norris, aka "Breaking Bad"'s Hank.

While Cormac McCarthy is undeniably an American literary icon, cinematic adaptations of his work haven't always fared so well. From the great ("No Country For Old Men") to the good ("The Road") to the missed opportunities ("All The Pretty Horses") to the ones no one saw ("The Sunset Limited"), the success rate has been scattered. But this fall will see two movies based on his efforts. Later this month, James Franco will unspool "Child Of God" in Venice, but for the rest of us, it will be "The Counselor" that we'll be seeing first. More importantly, it was written specifically for the screen. And a new trailer is here giving the biggest peek yet at what is one of the fall's biggest films.

One of the bigger fall films yet to find a festival home (if it choose to go that route) is Ridley Scott's star-studded, Cormac McCarthy penned "The Counselor." But the movie is coming regardless of whether or not it gets a red carpet premiere somewhere, and now two clips have arrived to give those highly anticipating the flick (like us) another unique taste of what's in store.

While it might seem that TIFF has every major movie coming before the end of the year, there are a still a strong handful of films yet to be announced for any festivals, and though we expect Ridley Scott's "The Counselor" to get a splashy premiere somewhere, it currently remains a big get for someone. And with the movie hitting theaters in just over two months, there's certainly going to be plenty to see from the movie.
