“The Count of Monte Cristo” has been made into at least twelve films (including one with Eugene O’Neill’s father in the titular role and most recently that 2002 version with Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce) and has been credited as inspiration for many a soap opera character and television series. Just two years ago, Warner Bros. snapped up a script that was a “futuristic take” on the story but we haven’t heard of any further development yet. With so many adaptations and incarnations, what is left of the 19th century Dumas epic for director David S. Goyer to explore? Well, the word is that he plans to make a “19th century Dark Knight."
