Criterion, Soderbergh, King Of The Hill
Steven Soderbergh is nothing if not candid. And self-critical. But unless you're a longtime fan you may not have heard the always-frank filmmaker essentially throw himself underneath the bus for Universal/Gramercy Picture’s 1995 crime film, "The Underneath” starring Peter Gallagher, William Fichtner, Elisabeth Shue and Alison Elliott. A remake of 1949's noir "Criss Cross," the film came at a critical time in the filmmaker's development and a tumultuous one in his life. He had started his career with the Palme d'Or breakthrough "Sex Lies & Videotape," a film that essentially jumpstarted the American indie film scene ("it's all downhill from here,” he quipped during his acceptance speech), but his subsequent efforts didn't connect with audiences.

The Wolf Of Wall Street
In the day-to-day grind of posting the 29th "The Amazing Spider-Man" trailer or hearing about what shiny toy some Hollywood executive is going to spend $300 million dollars on bringing to the big screen, it's easy to get cynical and wearied about movies. But if you're looking to get inspired by the art and power of cinema, spend a few minutes with Martin Scorsese to remember why we huddle in the dark to watch flickering images in the first place.

Fantastic Mr. Fox
Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox” hit the venerable Criterion Collection last week. Anderson is probably the only living filmmaker today that pretty much has every one of his films hit the prestige boutique label not long after its release. And it’s not hard to understand why the fastidious and well-organized filmmaker would want a comprehensive and detailed recount of his movies the way Criterion so lovingly creates.

Each month, The Criterion Collection drops their latest slate of releases, which leaves us weeping for the beating our bank account will be taking. And while the DVD world in general has seen both sales and prices fall as customers turn toward digital, the boutique label still thrives selling physical discs, at a premium price. But it's not just content that drives the cost of The Criterion Collection releases, but the often meticulous work that goes into restoring a film from a battered print into a high def Blu-ray platter.
