The Criterion Collection Will Unleash A Newly Restored 'Godzilla'

For the most part, the highly respected, top-tier home video house The Criterion Collection has steered clear of cult and genre movies. Oh sure, they've occasionally dipped their toes in the water ("Naked Lunch," "Hausu," The Nikkatsu Noir box, Monsters & Madmen box, among some others) but their staple releases have been auteur-driven, arthouse or foreign film releases. But monster movie buffs take note -- the granddaddy of them all is getting stamped with the wacky C.

And 10 Things Learned From The Criterion Collection's Release Of The Classic Film NoirLast week, the Criterion Collection released, "The Killing," Stanley Kubrick's ambitious 1956 classic film noir. While it was technically his third feature-length effort ("Fear and Desire" he disavowed as an amateur work and "Killer's Kiss" was so low-budget it was shot without sound and the actors dubbed in their lines later), "The Killing" was arguably Kubrick's first real picture with a budget and real cast. Produced by James B. Harris (he would also produce "Paths of Glory" and "Lolita"), "The Killing" was written by Kubrick and pulp crime author Jim Thompson ("The Killer Inside Me") and based on the novel "Clean Break" by American crime novelist Lionel White ("Obsession" was also adapted by Jean-Luc Godard as the basis for 1965's, "Pierrot le fou").

It's the middle of the month, which means the good folks over at the Criterion Collection have lifted the veil on a new batch of releases that are set to hit in October. For those purists of the label who have been decrying some of their more contemporary and/or "populist" choices of late, they will have nothing to complain about as this month is all about the oldies.

'Certified Copy' Considered "Minor Kiarostami," Errol Morris Docs & Wim Wenders' 3D Dance Pic 'Pina' RumoredLena Dunham arrived in a huge way when her debut feature film -- which she wrote, directed and starred in -- premiered at SXSW last year to strong buzz and reviews. While not everyone was head over heels for the film -- our man on the ground at IFFBoston sort of hated it -- Dunham quickly got the attention of Hollywood. She's teaming with comedy producer extraordinaire Judd Apatow on a comedy series for HBO, while Scott Rudin has tasked her with adapting "Dash and Lily's Book of Dares." So huge things are on the horizon for Dunham, who now appears to be a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, and The Criterion Collection seem to agree.
