Inside Llewyn Davis
Such is the awards season that just as your getting ready to wind things down on the west coast, or already in bed on the east coast, the honors keep coming. And the latest is from north of the border, with critics in Toronto weighing in on their faves of the year.

First! Once again, the New York Film Critics Circle made filmmakers and studios sweat to get their films screened in time as they position themselves to be the first (official) word on the awards race and augur of things to come ... at least until the National Board Of Review weighs in tomorrow. But for now, it looks like David O. Russell's "American Hustle" is the one to beat over the next couple of months.

To the prognosti-box! The first statues have been handed out and the Oscar race has changed! (At least for his evening until the next batch of trophies roll around). The Gotham Awards were handed out tonight in New York City and one highly touted film and another indie upstart led the pack of those taking home statues to fill up their mantle.

While the bearing it has on the stateside awards season race is fairly minimal at the end of the day, you can bet the folks over at Warner Bros. and Focus Features are very happy with the news they received over the weekend and will be adjusting their campaigns accordingly. Read More »

Movie Stars /Career Resurrections
This week “The Dallas Buyers Club” opens (you can read our review here), and it features a riveting, committed, physically gruelling and very likely-to-be-Oscar-nominated performance by Matthew McConaughey. If he is nominated, however, McConaughey will be at least a little in debt to the buzz that’s surrounded him of late as the newest member of what we could call the Comeback Club—that rarefied group of people who have, sometimes on a dime, turned their movie careers around and breathed new life into what was once moribund. It takes a great deal of luck to pull off this trickiest of acts, and for every actor who’s managed to hang onto their newly regained spot on top of the pile for a few years, there are ten who’ve briefly clambered all the way up only to topple off again a moment later.

Dallas Buyers Club
It's 1986, just months after Rock Hudson's death brings AIDS to its biggest public attention yet, but as far as Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey) is concerned, the real tragedy is the number of Hollywood babes the legendary actor could've easily bedded if he was straight. Along with cocaine, booze and whatever else can give him a good time, sex is an addiction for the Texas man, who seems to have been born with a cowboy hat on his head, a Budweiser in his hand and one eye constantly on the opposite sex. He's a good ol' boy and hustler, playing for and betting on anything. His rundown trailer is merely where he lays his head between the bar, his work as an electrician and wherever else his adventures might take him. But lately he's been getting rail thin, coughing a lot and even passing out. It's only after a freak electrical accident on a work site that he winds up being seen by a doctor, and a brief high voltage jolt is the least of his problems. He's got HIV, and he's given 30 days to live.

Best Physical Transformations
As we move deeper into the awards campaign season, a glut of films with showy central performances are hitting our screens, “For Your Consideration” for Academy voters. Over the years it’s been the subject of many a comedy sketch that there are a few markers of an Academy-friendly role, and this week’s “Dallas Buyers Club” (you can read our review here) is pretty much lousy with with them: it’s based on a true story, deals with AIDS and features not one but two instances of actors undergoing rapid and dramatic physical transformation to play their parts.

Dallas Buyers Club
Yes, "Dallas Buyers Club" is, reductively speaking, an "AIDS drama," but we've come a long way since Bruce Springsteen made us weep with "Streets of Philadelphia." The soundtrack for the upcoming Matthew McConaughey-starrer is just as energetic and vivacious as his lead character Ron Woodroof, and details of the tunes you'll be hearing along the way (and some inspired by the movie) have now arrived.

Dallas Buyers Club
If you've been paying attention the awards season race, the Best Actor and Best Support Actor categories could find Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, respectively, in the final five nominees. And yes, their performances in the upcoming "Dallas Buyers Club" is that good.
