New Pics From The Fall Film Season: 'Labor Day,' 'Out Of The Furnace,'
Fall movie season is upon us, which means that things are getting serious. The character pieces and adult dramas are finally coming out of the art houses and will soon be flooding the multiplexes as well, as various prestige pictures jockey for end-of-the-year critics lists and awards consideration. With that in mind, a whole slew of new photos have been unleashed for some of these prestige pics (many of them made our fall preview, and our Toronto International Film Festival preview too)—and guess what? We've got them for your scrolling pleasure.

2013 Toronto International Film Festival preview
While there might be some overlap with Venice and a little stolen thunder (at least for hardcore cinephiles) thanks to Telluride, that doesn’t make the TIFF lineup this year any less spectacular. In fact this year's slate — that runs as deep as it does long — works more than ever to make those other festivals, impressive though they may individually be, feel a little like the throat-clearings before the main event. Boasting a staggering array of splashy premieres, the latest from a barrage of auteurs and a host of indie efforts that have hitherto flown below the radar but that could surprise in a big way, it feels like the TIFF 2013 program may be their most packed ever (though we seem to say that every year). So whilst our attendees face the unenviable (but actually extremely enviable) task of working out their schedules, we've dug through the near and far corners of this embarrassment of riches to highlight the 15 films we're most anticipating from this year's Toronto International Film Festival. It wasn't an easy choice.

All right, all right, all right... Matthew McConaughey is ready to wow the critics again in 2013, after spending last year proving to everyone he was more than just a pretty rom-com face. But will he get the hardware this time to go with the acclaim? Well, he's taking on the double duty of both a physical transformation and playing a man stricken with A.I.D.S. in "Dallas Buyer's Club," with the first trailer now landing online (mostly).

This week is a bit like Christmas for cinephiles, as two of the fall's premiere festivals get underway with Venice and Telluride ushering in the awards season. And even with all the fireworks those line-ups will be bringing, as the first word on many big titles surface, right around the corner is Toronto. Set to cause a stir there is "Dallas Buyers Club," and a few more images from the highly anticipated movie have arrived.

The upcoming fall slate of movies—ranging from prestige-dressed awards season contenders to down and dirty grindhouse flicks—can feel like an avalanche of choices. But it's also the time of year when it's generally a rich avalanche of choices, rescuing movie fans from dreary CGI slop of the summer. And so to help get you prepared, a batch of pics from movies arriving before the end of 2013 have landed. So what's in store?

Labor Day, Kate Winslet ,Josh Brolin
In case you missed it this morning, TIFF unveiled their first wave of titles, and they basically went to IMDB, looked up any remaining movies left in 2014 that you might be looking forward to, and them in their lineup. Okay, maybe that's a bit extreme but it's an incredible slate this year, and now we're starting to see some first look images of the movies that will making their way to Toronto.

Matthew McConaughey must be thinking, "What on Earth do I have to do?" The actor stormed back into critical and audience hearts last year by putting on his shirt, dropping the romcoms, and showing that he's damn fine actor by delivering a fantastic performance in Steven Soderbergh's "Magic Mike," a subtle and solid appearance in Richard Linklater's "Bernie," and a wonderfully hilarious and sleazy turn in William Friedkin's "Killer Joe." The former was even a massive box office success, that was also met with great reviews. The result? He was snubbed for a much deserved Oscar nomination. This year, he's again revelatory in Jeff Nichols' beautiful fable "Mud" (one of the best of the year) but his next true Oscar shot will likely come with "The Dallas Buyer's Club."

For audiences and especially filmmakers, there is an aspect of deflated confusion in an actor’s misled sacrifices for an underwhelming film -- just ask Jared Leto in his role of Mark David Chapman in “Chapter 27.” Luckily, with the 2012 that Matthew McConaughey had, which saw “Bernie,” “Magic Mike,” and “Killer Joe,” that sort of fate for his AIDS drama “The Dallas Buyers Club” is unlikely, and now seems even more unlikely with the arrival of some welcome distribution news.

The years have seen countless musicians cross over into the acting world, and of late, indie films have featured their fair share of artists taking a stab at a new medium. Will Oldham (who actually was an actor first, starring as a child in "Matewan"), James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), David Yow (Jesus Lizard) and Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney) are among those who have traded the stage for a set, and now Deerhunter and Atlas Sound frontman Bradford Cox will be making the transition with the Jean-Marc Vallée-helmed '80s-set AIDS drama “The Dallas Buyer's Club.”
