The Dark Knight, Christian Bale
Aside from its blistering visual sense now expected from “Inception” director Christopher Nolan, “The Dark Knight” trilogy of films featured an entire spectrum of interesting aural performance choices, from Heath Ledger's drawly turn as the Joker to the terrifying incoherence of Bane as interpreted by Tom Hardy. However, the original--and the one consistent through all three films--is of course Christian Bale's gravelly-voiced Batman. Thanks to a look at the actor's audition tape in the recent box set for the trilogy, the voice has confirmed itself as always tied to the character and the role, but recently Bale spoke about his major choice and its reasoning.

Even though a new iteration of Batman is on the way with Ben Affleck suiting up for the "Man Of Steel" sequel, Christopher Nolan's trilogy is still held as the peerless adaptation bringing both sizzle and substance to the big screen with his "The Dark Knight" trilogy. And as such, folks continue to dissect his films.

While Christopher Nolan certainly deserves the praise he's received for taking Batman, and updating the character with a 21st century makeover, and placing the superhero in a gritty, realistic context, perhaps his greatest asset was not being overly familiar with the source material. And thus, he wasn't beholden to any preconceived notions of what "The Dark Knight" trilogy of films could and couldn't be. But with that being said, there were still rules to follow, and Nolan had a little help in setting up that framework.

Bat-fans are likely patiently awaiting the mailman or, if such a thing still exists, have already hit their local video store to snap up "The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector's Edition" which arrives today. Packaging all three of Christopher Nolan's Batman films, the set comes packed with extras, including such nuggets as Christian Bale's first audition tape, that finds him wearing Val Kilmer's suit reading his lines to Amy Adams (watch that here). But we doubt even the most diehard of fans will have to time to rewatch all three movies in one day, so here's another way to revisit the trilogy.

Superhero movies that never came to pass
This weekend "The Wolverine," starring Hugh Jackman as the adamantium-clawed avenger (is he ever not playing Wolverine?), will be slashing its way onto screens nationwide. But as fans know, this wasn't the original vision that Jackman and Fox had in mind. No, that version was to be helmed by Darren Aronofsky as his follow-up to his Oscar-winning "Black Swan," and we can only imagine what his take would've been on the story (based in part on the great Frank Miller/Chris Claremont run from the '80s) that serves as the foundation for this reboot. The movie's prolonged Japanese shoot was cited as the reason for his departure, but one also wonders if he would've been able to have the full creative sway he's used to.
