We haven't paid attention to the Grammys in years, mostly because it's irrelevant, these days we're barely familiar with half the nominees, and the show is usually pure tedium. (Don't even get us started on that Beach Boys tribute thing last year.) But for movie buffs looking to maintain their awards season high, yesterday's announcement of Grammy nominees did bring with it some films that are looking to collect gold from their pals in the music biz.

It has been a helluva run for "The Descendants." The return for filmmaker Alexander Payne not only earned critical raves, but it did remarkable business at the box office taking in over $150 million worldwide. And the industry sat up and took notice too, with the film earning numerous honors on the award circuit include a Golden Globe victory for George Clooney and Spirt Award wins for the screenwriters (Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash) and newcomer Shailene Woodley. The picture also went to the Oscars where it took home a statue for Best Adapted Screenplay as well.

'The Artist' Sweeps Spirit Awards Taking Best Picture, Director, Actor & Cinematography

The awards season train continues for "The Artist," and while in years past the Spirit Awards have tended to honor edgier or more decidedly independent fare, this year it looks like even they have the fever for the silent movie sensation. Taking home the big prizes for Best Picture, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Cinematography (Guillaume Schiffman) it looks like the stage has been set for the film to repeat these honors, and maybe more, tomorrow night at the venue formerly known as the Kodak Theater.

This weekend isn't just about the Oscars, for the record. Saturday night, as is traditional, sees the warm-up for the big show with the 2012 Spirit Awards, Film Independent's antidote to the Academy Awards, intended to honor the best of independent cinema. With recent winners of the top prize including "Juno," "The Wrestler," "Precious" and "Black Swan," they've provided the opportunity for films that are perhaps a little too dark, small or offbeat to win Best Picture from the Academy the chance to grab some gold.

BAFTA nominations were announced early/late/unreasonably late this morning by Daniel Radcliffe and Holliday Grainger, and after a pretty shoddy longlist, which serves mainly to drain the suspense from the nominations list and to let Emma Watson tell her friends "I was this close to a BAFTA nomination!," the organization redeemed itself to a degree.

69th Annual Golden Globe Winners: 'The Artist' & 'The Descendants' Lead The Way

Okay, a few comments until our deeper analysis tomorrow. First thing, "The Descendants" -- while taking two awards -- dosen't jump to immediate frontrunner status. "The Help," with its civil rights theme, was never a movie that was going to connect in a big way with the HFPA so it can't be counted out yet. That said, "The Descendants" is undoubtedly going to be player at the Oscars, with Clooney looking more and more like Best Actor material. But if anything, the Globes tonight proved Harvey Weinstein is always a force to be reckoned with. His films took home six awards -- including 3 for "The Artist" -- more than any other studio. And he knows exactly how this game is played, so watch The Weinstein Company work hard over the next few weeks.

Let's get the other stuff out of the way first. Yes, the Best Picture frontrunners you've expected all during the awards season -- "The Artist," "The Descendants," "The Help," "Midnight In Paris" -- have all earned PGA Award nominations for the top movie prize, the Darry F. Zanuck Producer Of The Year Award. But as always, it's the surprises that are the most fun, and this year, the PGA has a quite a few up their sleeve.
