After two bonkers weeks, the September festival season is just about dragging to a close (at least in terms of major awards-season debuts; Fantastic Fest is pretty much imminent, but it's not an awards player and the NYFF follows hot on its heels, but most of those films have screened already). And as ever, the films that we're likely to see strutting their stuff at the Kodak Theater -- and the ones that we won't -- have started to come into focus.

If the reviews out of Telluride and Toronto are anything to go by, and they usually are, Alexander Payne and George Clooney may very well need to book an appointment with their respective tailors for sometime mid-February.

It's going to be a very busy fall for George Clooney. He started things off in Venice where he unveiled his latest directorial effort "Ides Of March," swung into Telluride to help premiere Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" and now he's in Toronto this week with both films continuing their journeys into the awards season. And we've got a new look at one of them.

Paul Rudd & Jennifer Aniston's 'Wanderlust' Moves To Feb 2012; 'The Descendants' Moves Forward One WeekIt has been three long years since Will Smith, arguably one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, was last seen on the big screen. 2008 saw two sides of the thesp: the blockbuster star in "Hancock" and the awards season contender in "Seven Pounds." Though they were successful, neither film quite lived up to expectations - and now Smith seems determined to bring home the bacon. Next year he'll be back with his mega-franchise in tow for "Men In Black III," and he won't be keeping fans waiting as 2013 will once again see him at a theater near you.

Telluride is long departed, things are winding down in Venice (we're here for another 24 hours, but it's starting to look like a ghost town), and The Playlist team head off to Toronto this afternoon. But there's plenty more on the way in the months to come. Only this morning, AFI Fest revealed that it would open with the premiere of Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar," and shortly afterwards, the full line-up for the 55th BFI London Film Festival has been announced.

Shifting from heartbreak to cathartic laughter and back, sometimes within the same shot, director Alexander Payne and star George Clooney have collaborated on "The Descendants" to give us a very human story about a very flawed man and his very flawed family. Just like his previous pictures, the success of Payne's film rests on whether he can coax a nuanced performance from a strong male lead who is capable of accessing intense vulnerability. In “About Schmidt” (2002) he found what he needed in Jack Nicholson’s Oscar-nominated turn and two years later in “Sideways” (for which he shared the Oscar for Best Screenplay with Jim Taylor) he scored a double whammy with Paul Giamatti and the also Oscar-nominated Thomas Haden Church. For the central male protagonist of “The Descendants,” Payne turned to George Clooney and in the course of the Q&A that followed the screening he insisted that Clooney had provided him with the best acting collaboration of any of his films. Can the performance possibly live up to that? Actually, yes. Clooney takes on the role wholeheartedly and succeeds on pretty much every level.

'Tinker Tailor Solider Spy' Remains MIA On North American Festival ShoresWhile Venice has kicked off the fall festival season in grand style, the awards season really starts with Telluride. Reactions from the hippie resort film festival have proven to be a crystal ball at both box office and awards season performance and for many studios, cause to tweak and adjust their fall plans accordingly based on what happens in Colorado. Moreover, with TIFF right around the corner, a strong showing at Telluride can often put a previously under the radar the film into a strong spotlight in Toronto. "Up In The Air," "Juno," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Brokeback Mountain" are just some of the films that have benefited in the past, and with today's announced lineup, we could see the game change for a few more films.

Impressive Main Slate Includes 'The Artist,' 'Shame,' 'Le Havre,' 'Melancholia,' 'Miss Bala,' 'The Kid With The Bike' & MoreWith TIFF and Venice solidifying their lineups, organizers at the New York Film Festival revealed their full main slate today and it's pretty impressive. Kicking things off, the fest announced that Alexander Payne's "The Descendants" has landed the Closing Night Gala slot. To refresh your memory, the film is co-written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, and follows the story of a wealthy Hawaiian man named Matt King (Clooney), who takes his daughters (Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller) on a road trip to find the man his wife has been having an affair with after a boating accident leaves her critically injured. Beau Bridges, Matthew Lillard, Judy Greer, Robert Forster, Mary Birdsong and Nick Krause all co-star in the film which Payne has described as, “a drama with a light touch. Or it aspires to have a light touch.” The film will hit theaters on November 23rd.

Plus New Photos Of 'The Descendants' & Luc Besson's 'The Lady'Michael Bay's loss is the indie world's gain. Megan Fox may no longer be part of the "Transformers" franchise, but her next big screen role will be in Jennifer Westfeldt's "Friends With Kids," an ensemble indie that stars Adam Scott, Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O'Dowd and Edward Burns. Not too shabby and it pays to have famous friends.
