There have been few contemporary true crime stories examined as deeply as the West Memphis Three... but then again, few contemporary true crime stories have been as compelling, frustrating, controversial and heartbreaking as this one. After four documentaries (including the Peter Jackson-produced "West Of Memphis" slated for release later this year) a feature film is now on the way, and the tough job of casting the teenage boys accused of murdering and disfiguring three young boys is starting.

From a based-on-a-true-story drama to an action vehicle... Nothing really brings these two movies together, other than the solid talent being added, so let's get right to it...

Steve McQueen has quite an abundance of talent at his disposal for "Twelve Years A Slave" but now has more two more additions in TV staple Alfre Woodard and newcomer Lupita Nyong'o. Woodard will play a former slave who has risen through the caste system while Nyong'o plays the object of both affection and cruelty of Master Epps, to be played by Michael Fassbender. The film, of course, stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, a free black man who is tricked into slavery and faces a grueling life under several owners. Brad Pitt, Scoot McNairy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Garrett Dillahunt, Ruth Negga and Adepero Oduye all co-star in the John Ridley co-scripted tale. Most anticipated for 2013? It's up there, no doubt. [THR]

With "Young Adult" barely out of our minds, lensing is excitingly already underway on Jason Reitman's next directorial effort, an adaptation of Joyce Maynard's coming-of-age story "Labor Day." The project has now added a trio of talent with Alexie Gilmore ("World's Greatest Dad"), Lucas Hedges ("Moonrise Kingdom") and Brooke Smith ("Grey's Anatomy") all joining in unnamed supporting roles. The story centers on an escaped convict (Josh Brolin) who is taken in by a depressed single mother (Kate Winslet) and her teen son (Gattlin Griffith) over a Labor Day weekend with Clark Gregg, Tom Lipinski, Maika Monroe, Brighid Fleming and James Van Der Beek also co-starring. Well, we gave up on the second season of "The Killing" after being jerked around way too much by a plot that refuses to do anything, but the stars of the show don't have to worry about their Hollywood prospects. Joel Kinnaman has already popped up in a couple of movies and stars in the summer's indie rom-com "Lola Versus" and is slated to be the next "RoboCop." Meanwhile, Mirielle Enos has already bagged roles in "World War Z" with Brad Pitt and "Gangster Squad" with Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone and a zillion other people, and now she's joining another film with an equally impressive roster.

With Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's "Paradise Lost" trilogy, the Peter Jackson-produced "West of Memphis" and a plethora of books and other material about the West Memphis Three, you might think the subject was all done. Far from it. Last year "The Devil's Knot" started heading into production from Canadian director Atom Egoyan ("Exotica," "Chloe," "The Sweet Hereafter") with Reese Witherspoon to star. Now another Academy Award winner is coming on board.

The saga of the West Memphis Three is far from over. "Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" hits HBO next month and the Peter Jackson-produced documentary "West Of Memphis" will make its premiere at Sundance in January. Their story will still very much be in the public eye for the next while, and now, the West Memphis Three will be getting the big screen movie treat courtesy of Atom Egoyan.

If bittersweet justice wasn't swift for the West Memphis Three, who were finally freed on Friday after spending eighteen years behind bars for a crime they didn't commit, then Hollywood certainly is, as the same afternoon it was announced that Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan was moving right along with a feature film about the case entitled "The Devil's Knot." In case you somehow missed anything about this case, the West Memphis Three were three teenagers who were convicted of the murder and sexual mutilation of three 8-year-old boys in 1993. As the teenagers were fans of heavy metal music (and especially Metallica), the prosecution in the case suggested the motive behind the slayings was part of a Satanic ritual. Even with incredibly questionable police work—which many felt to be outrageous—sensationalized media, fear and panic from the satanism angle in the trial led to the teens’ conviction and sentence of life imprisonment (with one being sentenced to Death Row). With the help of the "Paradise Lost" documentaries by filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, their story became a cause célèbre, with support pouring in from around the world as it became very clear they did not commit the crime. But for those expecting that Egoyan's dramatization will track the full course of the story over the past two decades or so, they may be in for a surprise.

Related Documentary, 'Paradise Lost 3' Getting New Ending; Oscar-Qualifying RunWell, that was fast. No sooner were the West Memphis Three freed on Friday that Hollywood struck while the iron was hot. Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan ("Chloe," "The Sweet Hereafter") revealed his intentions to direct a feature-length drama called "The Devil's Knot," based on the true-life story of three teenagers, known collectively as the West Memphis Three, who were convicted of the murder and sexual mutilation of three 8-year-old boys in 1993. As the teenagers were fans of heavy metal music (and especially Metallica), the prosecution in the case suggested the motive behind the slayings was part of a Satanic ritual. Even with incredibly questionable police work -- which many felt to be outrageous -- sensationalized media, fear and panic from the satanism angle in the trial led to the teens' conviction and sentence of life imprisonment.
