2013 Toronto International Film Festival preview
While there might be some overlap with Venice and a little stolen thunder (at least for hardcore cinephiles) thanks to Telluride, that doesn’t make the TIFF lineup this year any less spectacular. In fact this year's slate — that runs as deep as it does long — works more than ever to make those other festivals, impressive though they may individually be, feel a little like the throat-clearings before the main event. Boasting a staggering array of splashy premieres, the latest from a barrage of auteurs and a host of indie efforts that have hitherto flown below the radar but that could surprise in a big way, it feels like the TIFF 2013 program may be their most packed ever (though we seem to say that every year). So whilst our attendees face the unenviable (but actually extremely enviable) task of working out their schedules, we've dug through the near and far corners of this embarrassment of riches to highlight the 15 films we're most anticipating from this year's Toronto International Film Festival. It wasn't an easy choice.

Awards season gets underway this week. We're sorry. We know it's August. But it's a fact—the premiere of "Gravity" on Wednesday at Venice is only the first in a veritable tsunami of Oscar contenders that will be unveiled on the Lido, with more unspooling at Telluride, TIFF and NYFF over the next six weeks or so. By the beginning of October, we'll have a much better sense of how the season will be looking (although some of these films have started screening already—we've seen a couple, though are embargoed for the moment).

Labor Day, Kate Winslet ,Josh Brolin
In case you missed it this morning, TIFF unveiled their first wave of titles, and they basically went to IMDB, looked up any remaining movies left in 2014 that you might be looking forward to, and them in their lineup. Okay, maybe that's a bit extreme but it's an incredible slate this year, and now we're starting to see some first look images of the movies that will making their way to Toronto.

Summer blockbuster season is now on the downward slope, and the festival season is on the horizon and we've already started getting ready for what will be an onslaught of eagerly anticipated films. Just last month, we laid out our predictions for the Venice Film Festival ahead of the formal announcement coming from organizers this month. But it looks like we locked down at least one movie that was already considered a strong contender to appear.

One of the most intriguing projects of the year has to be the Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy-anchored two-parter “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His/Hers.” Although details are relatively scarce on the double feature, we at least now know who will be scoring the dissolution of Chastain and McAvoy’s marriage.

A batch of stills from each “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His” and “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers” have provided the first major break in the case of the mysterious two-part project. For those of you who haven’t heard, the loftily titled pair of features is a two-part set from writer-director Ned Benson starring Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy as a husband and wife with a failing relationship. One film will tell the story through the eyes of the husband, a restaurateur, while the other film sees the events through the eyes of the wife, who goes back to college.

With Jessica Chastain pretty much locked for a Best Actress nomination for "Zero Dark Thirty," the actress has plenty more to come in 2013. She'll be going horror for the first time in the Guillermo Del Toro-produced "Mama" opening in January, and likely to crop up on the festival circuit where she has now become a familiar face, are a duo of romantic dramas in which she co-stars with James McAvoy.

Slowly shaping up to be one of the more unique productions this year, “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby” has gradually acquired a talented cast fit for its two-film premise -- that of a troubled marriage told, in each installment, from the husband and the wife's perspective. A few weeks back Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy were locked in as the couple, and now a slew of new names have come up just as the film heads into shooting.

It was in February we told you that Joel Edgerton and Jessica Chastain would be collaborating outside of their roles in Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming thriller “Zero Dark Thirty” for the inter-connected double bill of “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, His” and “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Hers.” Now it looks as if one of those thespians may have had too much on their schedule at once (and surprisingly it wasn’t Chastain, although the actress did turn down "Iron Man 3" due to her commitment to this project).

It looks like the hunt for Osama Bin Laden won't be the only place where Jessica Chastain and Joel Edgerton will hang together. The two rising actors will be reteaming for another project, one that as you might guess from the titles, has a rather ambitious concept.
