Though already well established as a comic actor, writer and director thanks to his work on Brit TV in fare such as "The IT Crowd," "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace" and more, with his debut feature film "Submarine," Richard Ayoade proved himself to be an astute stylist as well. While lazy folks compared his assemblage of French New Wave tics, mixed visual formats and a careful eye for set decoration and costuming as a Wes Anderson riff, he proved he could stand well enough on his own. And it looks like for his next effort, "The Double," he will make a distinct 180 from what he did before.

Um, WHAT? There is no horror movie opening this weekend. WHO WILL FILL THE SAW VOID??? I know we got “Paranormal Activity 3” last weekend, but it is decidedly abnormal for no big budget horror to be opening on October goddamn 28th. Are we on the decline of a cycle? Is everyone getting their yayas out at those horrible haunted house places? Think piece coming soon! In the meantime, check out our foreign horror feature for all your cinematic creepy crawlies. And, if you’re not in the Halloween spirit, here are some other films for you to enjoy: the long awaited “The Rum Diary”! “Puss in Boots,” for the children. Review: 'The Double' Is A Moth-Eaten Bag Of Cold War Clichés & Implausible Plot Twists

There are few movies whose tone, intent, and general content can be easily discerned from the front chosen for the opening title cards. But by the end of the title cards for "The Double," a new spy thriller starring Richard Gere and Topher Grace, you know what kind of movie you're in for: the blocky font flicks by, as if being decoded by some unseen force.; it's such a hackneyed stylish tic for this kind of enterprise, used in everything from direct-to-video thrillers to episodes of "24," that it was effectively lampooned in the Coen Brothers' send up "Burn After Reading" as yet another goofy aspect of the genre (watch them below).

If you like going into your Richard Tiffany Gere and Christopher John "Topher" Grace (together at last!) buddy movies unspoiled, try avoiding any upcoming promotional material for "The Double," because the trailer that has debuted over at Apple has no qualms about sledgehammering its various plot turns into your consciousness with all the subtlety of a massive, unexpected coronary. The film -- which is not that Jesse Eisenberg/Richard Ayoade Dostoevsky adaptation you’ve been hearing about -- pits two of Hollywood’s dullest acting talents against each other in what appears to be a ludicrous combination of Michael Mann’s “Heat” and Sally Field’s performance in “Sybil.”

Considering we'd worried about his potential range earlier in his career, and the fact that he doesn't always seem that enamored of the idea of being a movie star in interviews, we continue to be impressed by the choices that Jesse Eisenberg has been making. Playing Mark Zuckerberg in "The Social Network" was always going to be a tricky role to escape from the shadow of, but he's already had a big animated hit since with "Rio," he's in theaters next week in the R-rated comedy "30 Minutes or Less," and he's got some impressive and diverse projects lined up, including Woody Allen's "Bop Decameron," the Louis Leterrier heist comedy "Now You See Me" with Melanie Laurent, Mark Ruffalo and Amanda Seyfried, and a possible reteam with 'Social Network' producer Scott Rudin on a biopic of youthful anti-terrorism expert Evan Kohlmann.
