The Double, Eisenberg
Yeah, we know, the film came out last month, but after dropping The Best Films Of 2014 So Far..., "The Double" is back on our minds. It indeed is one of the finest pieces of cinema from the first six months of the year, but what can often be lost in the discussing the film's many accomplishments is how much it rests entirely on the chemistry between director Richard Ayoade and star Jesse Eisenberg. Well, you can see just why they got on so well in this recent interview.

10 Films In Which Actors Play Multiple Roles
This week, in celebration of the release of Richard Ayoade’s “The Double,” a film we loved at TIFF (here’s Kevin’s A- grade review), what we really ought to be doing is a feature on films about doubles. Except, whoops, we just did one, for the release of the similarly themed, but very differently executed “Enemy” from Denis Villeneuve (which we also loved at TIFF, here’s Rodrigo’s A grade take). And so we’re honing in on a different, but related aspect of Ayoade’s film, namely that lead Jesse Eisenberg takes a dual role here, and so adds his name to the roster of actors who’ve played more than one character within a single film.

Richard Ayoade
Similar to his excellent 2011 debut feature, “Submarine," quick comparisons to past classics have flown frequently with Richard Ayoade’s sophomore effort “The Double." This time Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil” has been elected the overriding influence; however, don’t ask Ayoade to verify such a claim. As the actor/director said when he sat down with us recently in Los Angeles, “I don't remember ‘Brazil’ well enough to even know whether that's true.”

The Double
As you've probably already surmised by now from our coverage, we are big fans of Richard Ayoade's "The Double." When we saw the film at TIFF last year, we called it "totally bonkers, hilarious and wickedly clever." And indeed, in addition to Jesse Eisenberg's great (dual) performance, the fantastic set design, the pitch perfect control of tone and the spot on casting, one of the elements that really makes the film sing, is the soundtrack. And today we've got a nice preview of what's to come.

The Double
In just under a month, Richard Ayoade's "The Double" will take you into a retro-future-punk world where there are two Jesse Eisenberg's and yet no one manages to confuse the two. In fact, one is smooth and confident, while the other is meek and anonymous, and the actor gets great mileage out of both parts in the film that hilarious and wonderfully put together. And now you can find out how it was all done.

The Double
As we've highlighted in our feature 20 Films About Doubles And Doppelgängers, the concept of a protagonist meeting their exact duplicate isn't exactly new. But in the hands of Richard Ayoade it becomes something inventive and madcap, and "The Double" has terrific fun with the premise of a man meeting the sexier, more successful version of himself.

The Double
"It was the idea of somebody so invisible & lowly that their double could appear and no one would notice; that was funny," director Richard Ayoade said during a recent Q&A about this forthcoming "The Double." And indeed, the film's pleasures come from indulging in the absurdness of the scenario of a doppelganger emerging, consuming the life of his opposite, and no one being any the wiser except for the double.

The Double, Eisenberg
Opening this weekend, Denis Villeneuve's "Enemy" using the conduit of the doppelganger (a popular cinematic theme, see our recent feature) to explore themes of identity and sexuality in a brilliantly surreal headfuck of a movie. And while Richard Ayoade's "The Double" also plays with two man as duplicates of each other, his aims are much more whimsical, but no less satisfying.
