The Equalizer
Sony is very high on their fall Denzel Washington vehicle "The Equalizer." An adaptation of the Edward Woodward-starring TV classic (particularly beloved of Rob Reiner in "The Wolf Of Wall Street"), it made the Black List while only in script form, initially attracted the attention of hot directors like Nicolas Winding Refn and Rupert Wyatt, and the film's apparently attracted some of the best test scores in the company's history, enough so that they've already put a sequel into development.

The Equalizer
You might be wondering why Denzel Washington would ever decide to take on a movie based on an '80s TV show. But when it comes to "The Equalizer," the actor only cared about one thing. "The title doesn't mean anything to me. It's the material," he told USA Today. "It's a classic story, the innocent girl and the guy coming in to save the day and kick some butt. You'll get some popcorn and escape for a couple of hours."

East Of Eden Gary Ross Jennifer Lawrence
Though she’s looking to take a short break, Jennifer Lawrence still has her planned reunion with “The Hunger Games” helmer Gary Ross to look forward to. Per THR, Ross has officially signed on to pen the screenplay to the epic two-part adaptation of John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” in addition to sitting in the director’s chair, something he has done for his last three directorial outings.

Few filmmakers have quite the crowded dance card that Nicolas Winding Refn boasts. Speaking to The Playlist on the eve of the North American premiere for “Only God Forgives,” Refn seems deeply pleased by having attached himself to so many projects, each one sounding more exciting than the last (particularly the mooted “Valhalla Rising” continuation). However, Refn’s next project is a detour into television, with the series “Barbarella,” which he describes, in typical Refn fashion, as “the ultimate fetish.”

Even if we wouldn't say he's quite cracked it yet, we've got a lot of respect for the way that Zac Efron is trying to establish himself as a proper grown-up adult actor. After all, the "High School Musical" series would be an albatross for many, but Efron's quietly been banging out a diverse mix of parts, and while things like "The Paperboy" and "At Any Price" haven't quite paid off yet, he's heading in the right direction. The actor's got several promising projects in the can already, including rom-com "Are We Officially Dating?," JFK ensemble drama "Parkland" and Seth Rogen/Nick Stoller comedy "Townies," and now, hot on the back of signing on to Eran Creevy's "Autobahn," the actor's just lined up thriller "Narc." Sounding a bit like a laugh-free "21 Jump Street," the project's being described as a based-in-fact, college-set version of "Donnie Brasco," and will see the actor play a fratboy who's busted for cocaine possession, and who agrees to become an informant to avoid jail time. The film's set up at Fox

With "Only God Forgives" screening this morning at Cannes (read our review), it's clearly Nicolas Winding Refn day here at The Playlist. In the shadow of the success of the new film's predecessor, 2011’s “Drive,” one of the more surprising moves the director made was signing up for an adaptation of the TV show “The Equalizer” with Denzel Washington set to star, before just as suddenly bailing on the project. While no specific reason was given for his exit at the time -- Sony was unable to close the deal with Refn -- the director has hinted at the reason for his departure.

Okay, we didn't see this coming. At all. At only sixteen years old, Chloe Moretz is already looking to push the envelope with the roles she'll take on, featuring in the grimy indie "Hick" (which by all accounts was pretty awful) while this fall she'll reign in terror as "Carrie." But taking the part of a young prostitute? Like we said, didn't see this one coming...

Because he doesn't have enough projects on this plate already....wait, do we have to, really? Okay: the boxing drama "Southpaw"; a Miles Davis biopic; heist flick "Chicagoland"; "Steel Town" for Legendary; a Suge Knight documentary for Showtime (recently wrapped); the thriller "Storming Las Vegas"; a Chinese language historical epic and possibly the "24" movie. Like we said, dude is not without options, but none of those above would have him re-teaming with his "Training Day" star Denzel Washington.

...and another one bites the dust. Granted, it all seemed pretty tentative anyway, but Sony will have to keep looking for a director to tackle their big screen take on "The Equalizer" as Rupert Wyatt has exited the picture.
