That’s right, 2010 is already in our rear view and we’re looking far, far ahead into 2011. If 2010 was the year of audiences rewarding original, smart blockbusters (“Inception”) and punishing glossy, but empty big-budget tentpoles (“The Tourist,” “Tron: Legacy”) the new year will find studios hoping once again that comic franchises and sequels can bring in the big bucks. No less than five comic-book movies are on the way with “Thor,” “Captain America,” “Green Lantern,” “Green Hornet” and “X-Men: First Class” all swinging into theaters, while tried-and-true franchises get sequels with “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Transformers 3,” “The Hangover 2” and “Sherlock Holmes 2” among the films looking to bank on previous successes.

Contrary to popular belief, we're optimists here at The Playlist. Just as almost every filmmaker goes into a project genuinely wanting it to be the best it can be (“Grown Ups" being a major exception, it would seem), we genuinely hope that every movie released will be worthwhile. Unfortunately, movies are difficult things to make, with any number of things that are liable to go wrong, and more often than not, we come away disappointed. So, if we come across as being cynical when compared to other, more cheerleader-type sites, it's really more a kind of self-preservational realism at work. After all, you can only be disappointed so many times before you grow up about it and learn to manage your expectations.

We Can't Wait To Hear David Fincher's "I Don't Care" ResponseNiels Arden Oplev is not too happy with Hollywood, for entirely predictable reasons. The director behind "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" doesn't think much of the bean counters in Hollywood doing their own version of the story, and he candidly revealed as much to Word & Film recently.

Swedish Actress Also Says She's Happy David Fincher Went With An Unknown For His Version Of 'Dragon Tattoo'Noomi Rapace. She's everywhere. The hottest thing out of Sweden since IKEA, Volvo and Björn Borg. Ever since her icy, steely turn as Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish tele-version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" she's swept up every female role in Hollywood remotely resembling someone gorgeous, but with grit and mettle, right?
