The Giver
“Harry Potter,” “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games.” These franchises make up the Mount Rushmore of YA adaptations and studios are falling over themselves to pick up the rights to any YA novel they can get their hands on. It’s therefore surprising that it’s taken this long for Lois Lowry’s “The Giver” to finally get the big screen treatment so The Weinstein Company is making up time by putting the marketing machine into overdrive ahead of the film adaptation’s release next month.

The Giver
Fans of Lois Lowry's "The Giver" are loathe to lump it into the YA genre, so they probably won't like this much: this new trailer for the movie feels, for better or worse, like a cross between "The Truman Show" and "The Matrix." There, we said it. However, neither of those movies has Jeff Bridges or Meryl Streep so that certainly niggles at our curiosity at what looks like yet another dystopian tale where people who have the wool pulled over their eyes finally see the truth.

The Giver
Here we go again... While Jeff Bridges may have been on the ball with "The Giver," developing the adaptation of Lois Lowry’s award-winning book for well over a decade, the film is entering an arena littered with carcasses of similar, but failed efforts ("The Host," "Beautiful Creatures," "The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones" etc). So can this one rise above the pack?

First Look At Jeff Bridges In YA Adaptation 'The Giver'

The Giver
“The movie will not be an exact duplication of the book. It’s taking a lot of licenses,” Jeff Bridges told EW about his long, long in the works adaptation of Lois Lowry’s 1993 classic "The Giver" (the actor has been trying to get it made for over two decades). Set in a futuristic, dystopian world where society has eradicated memories and emotion, the responsibility of remembering the past to a single person, the Receiver. The hero, Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), is selected to be the new Receiver, but while being trained by the titular Giver (Bridges), a previous Receiver, he finds himself struggling with the duties he bears. Though she's conquered the music world and the gossip pages, Taylor Swift is now trying her hand at acting. Okay, then ...

Winning the Newberry Award in 1994, Lois Lowry's "The Giver" seems to have been in development nearly as long. The movie came close to being made a couple of times, once with "House of Sand and Fog" writer-director Vadim Perelman at the helm over at Fox, and then again at Warner Bros with David Yates to direct. That fell apart when Yates went on to tackle "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" instead. Last we heard well over a year ago was that it was still puttering along after Jeff Bridges stepped in and nabbed the rights, with Perelman still involved at the script level. Now, some new life has been kicked into it.

'House of Sand and Fog' Writer-Director Vadim Perelman Writing ScriptThis year marks 40 years since Jeff Bridges broke through in "The Last Picture Show," and what's truly remarkable is that the actor is probably now a bigger star than ever before. His long-awaited Oscar win came with "Crazy Heart" in 2009, and last year he headlined the tentpole "Tron: Legacy" and took the western "True Grit" to a massive box office, picking up another Oscar nomination for his trouble. And at 61, there's no sign of stopping any time soon: he's about to shoot two blockbusters back-to-back, with potential Harry Potter successor "The Seventh Son" swiftly following the effects-heavy cop flick "R.I.P.D" with Ryan Reynolds.
