It's a good morning to be a Los Angeles pharmacist, as, Hollywood is just this moment waking up with their worst hangover of the year. Yep, it's the morning after the Golden Globes, and what the Hollywood Foreign Press Association lacks in respect or prestige, it makes up for in free-flowing booze and raucous partying. And so long as you don't take it too seriously, it can make for pretty entertaining viewing, something proven last night.

Earlier: The oft-repeated maxim is that the Golden Globes do not matter. They do not. However, if you take the polar opposites of the season of critic awards (high-brow, cerebral) and the Globes (extremely populist), you can often (when also considering more significant Guild awards, of course) split the difference and land where the Academy Awards ultimately will.

Thought that we'd be having a bit of a breather from awards season stuff now that the Oscar nominations are out? Ha ha, think again. Sunday brings the Golden Globes, and though they are given out by the fairly discredited Hollywood Foreign Press Association, they are probably the most high-profile awards ceremony bar the Oscars. And this year, they have a slightly different role; the move up of the nomination announcements means that the Globes winners will be timed nicely for the start of phase two of Academy voting.

In one of the bigger weeks of the awards season (bar Oscar nominations week itself), we've already seen the LA Film Critics Awards, the Critics Choice Awards and the SAG Awards, among others, hand down their winners or nominees for the films and actors of the past twelve months. And this morning, the Academy's black sheep cousin (the one who turns up at family gatherings for the free booze, namedrops about the time he met Johnny Depp, then leaves), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, have announced their nominees for their 70th Golden Globe Awards.

The Critics Choice Awards nominations, announced this morning? They're for the birds, man. The next couple of days sees the awards nomination announcements keep coming, with two more major precursors being unveiled: the Screen Actors' Guild tomorrow, followed on Thursday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Golden Globes awards.

If the Oscars are the grown ups table, then the Golden Globes have usually been the looser, more gravy-stained kids table of the awards season and in 2013, two very funny women and friends will combine forces to hand out a bunch of awards.

The third Monday in January is popularly known in Hollywood circles as "hungover-as-shit Monday," as it immediately follows the Golden Globes, the award season's drunker, more badly-behaved little cousin. Among all the questions raised by the Golden Globes last night (What was the point of asking a defanged Ricky Gervais back? How did we get to the point where "W.E" can legitimately be described as an award-winning film? Is Johnny Depp Irish now or something? What is "Episodes"?), the one we come back to here is whether or not the Globes are really a force when it comes to predicting how the Oscars will turn out.

Okay, a few comments until our deeper analysis tomorrow. First thing, "The Descendants" -- while taking two awards -- dosen't jump to immediate frontrunner status. "The Help," with its civil rights theme, was never a movie that was going to connect in a big way with the HFPA so it can't be counted out yet. That said, "The Descendants" is undoubtedly going to be player at the Oscars, with Clooney looking more and more like Best Actor material. But if anything, the Globes tonight proved Harvey Weinstein is always a force to be reckoned with. His films took home six awards -- including 3 for "The Artist" -- more than any other studio. And he knows exactly how this game is played, so watch The Weinstein Company work hard over the next few weeks.

We've only just recovered from yesterday's SAG award nominations, where "The Artist" continued to lock down its frontrunner status, and "The Help" picked up a strong haul of nods, while the likes of "Shame" and "Hugo" were shut out completely (among the many snubs detailed here). A mere 24 hours later, and we're back on the awards beat, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announcing the annual Golden Globe nominations this morning.
