As the case has been made abundantly clear, "The Great Gatsby" is going for broke in the big screen, 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel. Of the biggest sticking points for those still on the fence about the movie is Baz Luhrmann's choice to go with contemporary music (with a soundtrack overseen by Jay-Z), adding some modern swagger to the Jazz Age tale. We'll know in a few weeks if it all works, but an early taste has arrived.

Giving your summer movie viewing a requisite dose of literary authority, Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" is coming with an equal mix of high expectations, quiet rumbling about a troubled production, star power, a Cannes Film Festival opening slot, 3D, Jay-Z and whatever else you can add on the pile. It's a helluva basket of eggs. And if that weren't enough, the director is already hinting that the familiar story from the classic book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, could be in for a bit of tweaking.

Well, you gotta admit, Baz Luhrmann has a pretty big pair of brass ones when it comes to "The Great Gatsby." With a soundtrack dressing up the classic American novel with songs by will.i.am, Fergie, Lana Del Rey, Jay-Z and The xx, he's certainly taking F. Scott Fitzgerald's book out of the classroom and into...somewhere else. And with 3D visuals, lavish set design and, oh yeah, an all star cast, it's go big or go home. And now a few more treats are here to bring you into Luhrmann's world.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Jay-Z’s role in the music of Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” was clarified. He’s the Soundtrack Executive Producer, and word is starting trickle out on who Hov is bringing with him for the soundtrack of Luhrmann’s flashy adaptation. Hint: He put a ring on it.

Warner Bros. has released six new “The Great Gatsby” character posters. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the posters’ Art Deco-style gilded trim evokes the glitz of the flapper era and the pizzazz we’ve all come to expect from the director of “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge.” As you can see below, each poster shows a literal close-up of the character along with a figurative close-up in the backdrop.

If your audience needs to read up beforehand, your movie may be a little over-ambitious. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” however, which stands at sub-200 pages and with a tally of no more than seven principal characters, doesn’t present itself as an obvious adaptive head-scratcher. So a new character map for Baz Luhrmann’s long-awaited Cannes opener from graphic designer Something So Sam, is presumably more fun than function.

When rapper/entrepreneur Jay-Z was reported to be "scoring" Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" the first thing we were asked was, why didn't we report this? Well, for one, we're sticklers for language. You wouldn't say Diablo Cody wrote "Evil Dead" if she just did a dialogue pass on it, right? Well, there's that and there's the fact that longtime Luhrmann composer Craig Armstrong was listed as the composer for the movie from the very first (and all subsequent) trailers. So while it sounded nice, it likely wasn't quite right, but of course WB wouldn't comment, so we had to wait. (But yes, Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church In The Wild" features in the trailers).

After years of faintly disastrous picks that meant the reputation of the Cannes opener was somewhat sullied, the festival, the world's most prestigious, has stepped up its game in the last few years. Of the last four years, three of the Opening Night films -- Pixar's "Up," Woody Allen's "Midnight In Paris" and Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," went on to see wide acclaim and success around the world (the outlier, Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood," which kicked off the festival in 2010, not so much).
