Hollywood doesn’t really recognize the seasons as clearly as you. Which is why even though you’re in school, summer begins in May, and even though you still have a full month of spring, that period usually closes in Hollywood around this time every year. In 2011, “summer” is beginning even earlier with next week’s release of “Fast Five,” sure to be the year’s biggest opener, which means that “Rio” effectively gets its licks in before the hot season begins, scoring a second straight weekend at #1 with a $26 million take.

Do you hear that? Do you? That's the sound of millions of Google Alerts pinging into the inboxes of the members of Team Edward everywhere. The tenacious and ornery breed of fan that draws their life force from the chiseled cheekbones and tousled locks of Robert Pattinson ironically seem to have the famous vampire in a compromising position: sucking him dry so that they may live to type another heated comment defending their loved one on a snarky blog post reporting a bit of casting news. Did y'all read that Vanity Fair profile? Kinda depressing, no? Think about what you are doing to him, tweens and middle-aged women! This weekend, we'll see if R-patz is able to translate that into dinero in "Water for Elephants." OH, BUT here comes the box office spoiler: Madea. Say what you will about granny drag, Tyler Perry's one-sided feud with Spike Lee, or his directorial capabilities, audiences eat up that Madea. Can't argue with those greenbacks!

"POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold" (yeah, that's actually the full title), Morgan Spurlock's new takedown of product placement in television shows and movies, starts out cleverly enough, with a sharp analysis of all the ways in which major corporations, in their limitless, greedy quest for the almighty dollar, wedge advertising into other aspects of entertainment. Hilarious clips from major motion pictures and television series are shown, including a snapshot of "90210," in which characters earnestly bicker while discussing (and prominently displaying) a can of Dr. Pepper.

Another year, another Woody Allen film. And say what you will about his more recent output, for this writer at least, the yearly Woody Allen movie is a comfort, like an old friend returning for a visit and a pleasant entry on our film calendar.
