'The Hobbit' what happened? You were supposed to be our hero. The “Lord Of The Rings” pictures, all released during the holiday period, had steady-to-muscular second weekend holds. But 'Hobbit,' you’re looking more like an average blockbuster, losing almost 60% of your audience. What’s going on? You were expected to dominate this frame like you did last weekend. Could it be that your mighty Cinemascore was inflated by the first-weekend Tolkien superfans? Could it be that your ad campaign simply emphasized the ties to the earlier films, implying less of an individual story and instead, “Yes, more of this”? Oh, 'Hobbit,' you’ve disappointed us greatly.

Well folks, today is the Mayan Apocalypse, the official end of the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar -- which doesn't sound so bad -- and, possibly, the world as we know it, which sounds pretty terrible. If we're all still here tomorrow (or tonight, for that matter), there is a delectable spread of filmic morsels on this weekend's menu. The latest Judd Apatow feature, Tom Cruise's new moody thriller, the first direct cinematic adaptation of Jack Kerouac's most famous work, and Kathryn Bigelow's second venture into modern warfare will grace the nation's silver screens, and we would encourage you to indulge where possible. So, toast the end of planet Earth while you tell us what you hope you'll be seeing in the comments section below. It probably wouldn't hurt to knock on wood or rub a rabbit's foot too. No, seriously: we really want to see "Gangster Squad" next year.

There are at least two movies opening this holiday season which seem like they were stolen from the script vault at Touchstone Pictures, circa 1992. The first, "Parental Guidance," features the heavyweight one-two punch of Billy Crystal and Bette Midler, concerns grandparents outwitted by their grandkids, and could play snugly in a double feature alongside "Father of the Bride Part II." And opening this week is "The Guilt Trip," another movie that tries to wring guffaws out of a similarly super-tired idea (taking a cross-country road trip with your unbelievably stereotypical and annoying Jewish mother).

And while that annoyance takes center stage in the first trailer for the film, overall it has a heartening, charming vibe that is hard to deny.

Half of us think it will be a movie to avoid this upcoming holiday season, while the other half see lots of comic potential in the pairing of Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen. Just when you thought it was all about 2013 now for the studios, the leftover holes in the 2012 film calendar are getting filled up quick. While many, including us, were generally expecting a 2013 picture, Paramount has announced that Robert Zemeckis' "Flightplan" (now just simply known as "Flight") starring Denzel Washington will land in theaters on November 2. Oscar-watch? Hmm, hard to tell and our gut says no, but this one does read more drama than actioner. It's got a fairly easy run, opening against teen movie "21 And Over" and Disney animation "Wreck-It Ralph," although 007 flick "Skyfall" follows the week after. Co-starring Don Cheadle, Brian Geraghty, John Goodman, James Badge Dale and Bruce Greenwood, "Flight" centers on an airline pilot (Washington) who saves a flight from crashing, but an investigation into the malfunctions reveals something troubling: his alcohol issues.
