Todd Phillips' sequel is already upon us and has already grossed $31 million in its first day of release (it's evidently on track for a $100-$125 million Memorial Day opening weekend; the masses like a familiar opiate).

The summer of sequels begins in earnest as two box office behemoths of years past hope that audience goodwill and fond memories translate into ticket sales. "The Hangover Part II" does its 'Hangover' thing, this time in Bangkok! And "Kung Fu Panda 2" hi-yahs onto screens with a stacked roster of all-star voice talent. Annnnd, oh my god, talk about burying the lede! Fuckin' "The Tree of Life" starts its roll out! Terry Malick! Brad Pitt! Sean Penn! Dinosaurs! At least 15 of you just wet yourselves. I know you. I know you Playlist readers, and your love of T. Malick. With good reason. Will it be everything you dreamed of and more? I really hope so!

Review: 'The Hangover Part II' Is A Lazy, Unpleasant & Unfunny Mess

Unlike most of the summer movies, which seem to be thundering into theaters without any real anticipation beyond the cacophonous marketing hype, "The Hangover Part II" seems to be a film people are unreasonably excited for. The 2009 original, directed by Todd Phillips, has metamorphosed from simply being the biggest R-rated comedy of all time (and winner of a Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Golden Globe) to being a movie that average filmgoers consider an instant "classic" of the genre and a staple of any fun-lover's DVD collection. (It's also the biggest selling comedy DVD of all time. Jesus.) The prospect of another movie, again starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis, coming this quickly, has been tantalizing for cinemagoers and something that is getting people really, really jazzed, which makes it somewhat harder to report that "The Hangover Part II" is one of the laziest, unself-aware and most unpleasant Hollywood products we've seen all year. And we just saw the fourth "Pirates Of The Caribbean" movie a couple of weeks ago.

Plus 2 Clips From 'Submarine' & TV Spots From 'Horrible Bosses'Another day, another batch of video footage goodness from upcoming comedy releases. Although goodness may be a stretch when it comes to the most substantial: the full trailer for the Jim Carrey vehicle "Mr. Popper's Penguins." A loose adaptation of the children's book classic, with "Mean Girls" director Mark Waters at the helm, the teaser didn't exactly look hugely promising, and if anything the full length version is worse, showing Carrey sleepwalking through the exact same dad-who-neglects-his-kids-because-he-works-too-hard beats as he was fifteen years ago in "Liar Liar." Just think: only a year ago, Noah Baumbach was going to direct this. [MSN]

Also Defends Rehashing Original Film's Story: "Since When Have Comedies Been About Plot?""Bridesmaids" might have captured the nation's hearts and minds for the moment, taking in a surprising hefty box-office take over the weekend, but next week brings what's all-but-certain to be the biggest comedy of the summer: "The Hangover Part II," the speedy sequel to 2009's surprise hit. And we were initially looking forward to the film: the first was good fun, if not the comic behemoth that its box office take might suggest, and we even enjoyed Todd Phillips mean-spirited fall comedy "Due Date," even if no one else did.

To Be Fair: We All Know What's Gonna HappenHere's a fun game, for you students of narrative structure out there. This post includes three-dozen or so images from the imminent comedy sequel blockbuster. Print them off, stick them on index cards, and see if you can come up with a plot for what you'd put the Wolf Pack through in Bangkok. If your pitch ends up being more entertaining than Todd Phillips' finished product (and considering the buzz from early screenings, it may not be hard), then congratulations! You've won the chance to write "The Hangover Part III." Or, at least a direct-to-video sequel to "Hot Tub Time Machine" or something.

While the terrible first trailer for "The Hangover Part II" underlined in thick black Sharpie how similar the premise was for the sequel to the original -- to the point of making it seem like a half-baked, cash-in knock-off -- how weird is it that the TV spots are beginning to restore our faith a bit?

Another week, another batch of new posters being unveiled for Summer Blockbuster hopefuls. First up, we have a new theatrical banner for "Cars 2." The triptych image shows off the film's international setting and is full of stunning detail which you can get a better look at over at Apple. The film features Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy, ugh) heading overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. We're still not sold on the film itself but we're crossing our fingers that it could be fun. If anyone can pull it off, Pixar can.
