Okay, we've had the lists from the high brow movie magazines, the exclusive critics groups, various newspapers and magazines, but what about one from somewhere that has a bit of pulse on what the folks are actually seeing at the multiplex? Well, MTV has dropped their top ten movies of the year, and while some may balk at the populist list, we gotta give them credit for highlighting a couple of overlooked movies.

Brands and franchises are lucrative properties, and considering how much they mean to the bottom line of a studio, it's no doubt they have teams of lawyers working around the clock to protect anything that might harm or impair the boatloads of money they'll make. And sometimes that zeal just gets plain ridiculous.

Today in New York the junket was held for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," the first in the new trilogy of J.R.R. Tolkein-based films from "Lord of the Rings" mastermind Peter Jackson. A sweeping fantasy epic that takes place above and below Middle Earth, featuring heroes both new and familiar, 'The Hobbit' is made even more audacious and mind-boggling by Jackson's insistence in shooting the movie in 48 frames per second, which gives the 3D some much-needed oomph and, honestly, might make you a little bit sick (more on that in a minute).

If you were anywhere near Twitter around midnight, you likely witnessed the embargo drop on the reviews for Peter Jackson's highly anticipated "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." And indeed, we had our own take on the movie, noting that after the picture gets off to a rocky, goofy start, it becomes "a thrilling ride that’s one of the most enjoyable, exciting and engaging tentpoles of the year." Not bad at all, but as for that 48fps? It hasn't gone down quite as Jackson might have planned. In our review we noted it took about an hour to get used to the super high-res image, but that it's effective once the big setpieces kick in toward the finale of the film. But what did other critics have to say? Read on....
