Making "The Hobbit" movies is expensive stuff (estimates put each installment between $200-300 million...damn...), which means the marketing and sales opportunities for this are going to be "interesting." Hell, we've already seen Air New Zealand and Denny's doing their best to pimp the brand. And when it comes to getting money out of the superfans, Peter Jackson and co. are finding ways to make completists buy stuff twice over.

Holy Middle Earth! It's safe to say that New Zealand and Peter Jackson are in the midst of love affair, with the director bringing shine and interest to the country thanks to shooting his "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy in the country, utilizing their pristine natural settings. And while there was a brief moment when it looked like that relationship was going to be frayed, with a labor dispute finding Jackson threatening to take "The Hobbit" movies elsewhere, all ended well. And with the first of the trilogy set to hit theaters in just over a month, Jackson and New Zealand have solidified their friendship.

Though "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2" have little in common except unnecessarily long movie titles, they are both franchises that are beginning and ending, respectively, this fall. And they both are trying to catch you at home as you try and find a "Seinfeld" re-run to tell you they are coming to theaters.

It was a while ago, so you might have forgotten, but at one point it was a question mark whether or not Ian McKellen would return to Middle Earth to play Gandalf. "Sequels aren’t necessarily as rewarding to act in as their originals," McKellen wrote on his blog at the beginning of 2011 responding to a report about the reasons why or why not he was going to be in "The Hobbit" films. "The deciding negotiation was not about money but about dates. Gandalf is needed on set over the next 18 months but with sizeable breaks when I can work on other projects. My worry that I could not easily escape from Middle Earth was lifted."

As one of our team wrote yesterday about "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey": "I for one will be happy to pull up some popcorn and sit down for 2 ½ (and hopefully not more) hours with moderately tempered expectations and enjoy what I can." It looks like he might want to put his ass into training, as Peter Jackson has revealed the runtime for the first movie in the trilogy and, not surprisingly, it's very, very long.
