In case you hadn't heard, diehard fans of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" received a treat last week with a behind-the-scenes look at the sequel, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." However, you could only participate in the Peter Jackson-led Q&A if you had purchased the 'Unexpected Journey' Blu-Ray and entered a code from the DVD package (nifty way to make you spend that extra dough for what will be a double dip release, no?). Well, some of that footage has made it's way online now and it shows a few small first-look reveals of the cast in action.

It was a while ago, so you might have forgotten, but at one point it was a question mark whether or not Ian McKellen would return to Middle Earth to play Gandalf. "Sequels aren’t necessarily as rewarding to act in as their originals," McKellen wrote on his blog at the beginning of 2011 responding to a report about the reasons why or why not he was going to be in "The Hobbit" films. "The deciding negotiation was not about money but about dates. Gandalf is needed on set over the next 18 months but with sizeable breaks when I can work on other projects. My worry that I could not easily escape from Middle Earth was lifted."

With Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" now stretching across three films, there is even more room to surprise fans of the director's adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's books. And Colbert Nation followers in particular, will want to keep an eye out.

One problem with turning your two-part fantasy epic into a three-part fantasy epic is that you need to find a new title from somewhere. It's alright when a "Twilight" or a "Hunger Games" decide to split their final installment into two, because they can always go for a "Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 and 2" or "Mockingjay Pt. 1 and 2" type deal, but for "The Hobbit," Peter Jackson had already added two new subtitles to his one-book source material, admittedly ones already associated with the books -- "An Unexpected Journey" and "There And Back Again."
