The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug
If Peter Jackson were a DJ, he'd be the kind that releases extended 12" vinyl remixes. And as a director, he's certainly shown his love for padding his movies with as much stuff as possible. Already released in extended editions, Jackson recently revealed that there's even more material lying around for this original "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy that could be added on. And his love of inserting excised footage continues with his "The Hobbit" films. 'An Unexpected Journey' got 13 minutes tacked on when it went to stores, and 'Smaug' nearly doubles that with 25. And now another peek from 'Smaug' has arrived, this time at the stuff Jackson just had to make sure saw the light of day.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
I can hear the groans now. It’s kind of amazing the narrative change on Peter Jackson and his expanded “The Lord Of The Rings” hexalogy. The first trilogy, people loved and couldn’t get enough, clamoring for those extended edition DVDs, with more and more footage making for running times that were over three hours for each film. But cut to his new, not-as-well-received ‘Hobbit’ trilogy, and there’s a lot of bemoaning about the similar running times of these movies, in most social spheres.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Its loss this past Sunday night to “Gravity” doesn’t discount the effectiveness of the visual effects work in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” While Weta Digital’s work on the film’s titular dragon garnered the most attention last December, the effects company’s wizardry can be seen throughout the entire film and a new video has arrived online detailing how one particular non-Smaug-related sequence in the film was created.

'The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug' & '12 Years A Slave' Lead 19th Empire Award Nominations

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
In a week's time, the Oscars will be over, but that doesn't quite mean the end of awards season, with a few stragglers — normally more populist than high-minded — following in the weeks and months after. Now in their 19th year, the Jameson Empire Awards — run by the UK movie magazine — are more MTV Movie Awards than BAFTAs, in part because they're voted for by the public. Read More »

Iron Man 3
With the clock ticking on 2013, you might be finalizing your list of resolutions before heading out to celebrate the New Year. But in Hollywood, you can bet that studio executives are looking at the year that was, and hoping to do more of the same in the years ahead. Much more.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
We're in the last leg of the winter holidays and it shows at the box office with strong holdovers leading the pack. This weekend, in between Christmas and New Year's Eve, marks that wonderful time when whole families pile in droves to see those films they've been hearing so much about (Did you take Nana and Pop-Pop to see "August: Osage County"?), those who can escape to catch up on Oscar contenders. ("Her" is in limited release and well worth the drive) and an interesting third group reveling in the holiday cheer (not naming names, but we know someone over the age of 10 who saw "Frozen" for the third time).

Best Action Sequences Of 2013
It seemed as though 2013 was positively clogged up with major "event" movies, each one bigger, louder, and more expensive than the last. Every week some new gargantuan thingummy was trying to one-up the previous week's path of destruction. While many of these movies turned out to be numbing and dull, there were still a few that were actually pretty dazzling, or at the very least featured one truly outstanding sequence that caused you to drop your popcorn or spill your oversized soda in pure, unabashed delight. Almost every big movie in 2013 was marketed at 13-year-old boys; the very best of them made you actually feel like you were 13 again, if only momentarily.

Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug
By Odin's raven, by the beard of Zeus, by the furry foot of Bilbo ("the bravest little hobbit of them all," according to legend/fan Leonard Nimoy)... Tolkien enthusiasts stood their ground against Anchorman's cult following and massive marketing campaign (Buy Dodge). As the dust settled, the streets did indeed run red (or at least reddish) with Burgundy's blood as Smaug's fire-belly burnt Baxter, Doby and the Channel 4 news team to smithereens. Not to say that it wasn't a battle of worthy adversaries, with 'Hobbit 2' suffering the largest percentage drop on the leaderboard (57.3% decrease), but 'Smaug' managed past that dent under its left wing and maintained its spot on top of the box office heap. Also of note for the weekend, there was a 36.6% increase at the overall box office since last year, proving that sometimes mediocre, rather than miserable, weather can be good for ticket sales.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
Braving the snow, sleet and other miscellaneous travails relating to cold weather, audiences came out in droves for "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." The second of the three 'The Hobbit' installments (or 'The Lord of the Rings' prequels, cue wincing from Tolkien fans) took the top spot and made $73.7 million for the weekend, which included a strong midnight opening night of $8.8 million, the second best ever for the month of December.
