We imagine one of the buzz words in movie marketing departments these days, along with 'Pinterest' and 'viral games' is 'app.' Barely any major movie hits theaters without some kind of iOS-related promotional tie-in, often in the form of a game, or something similar. Some are genuinely nifty (the Hans Zimmer one for "Inception" was pretty great), most are a bit half-hearted, but few are particularly revelatory about the movie themselves.

One problem with turning your two-part fantasy epic into a three-part fantasy epic is that you need to find a new title from somewhere. It's alright when a "Twilight" or a "Hunger Games" decide to split their final installment into two, because they can always go for a "Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 and 2" or "Mockingjay Pt. 1 and 2" type deal, but for "The Hobbit," Peter Jackson had already added two new subtitles to his one-book source material, admittedly ones already associated with the books -- "An Unexpected Journey" and "There And Back Again."

No matter where you stand on the issue of director Peter Jackson shooting his now three-part adaptation of "The Hobbit" in 48 frames per second — twice the standard film speed — at least it won't cost any extra to watch it that way. At least, not any more than what you're already spending to watch the film in 3D. That's particularly good news for anyone that saw the 10 minutes of footage that Jackson unveiled at CinemaCon earlier this year, where the reaction was mixed at best.

"I cannot guarantee his safety, nor will I be responsible for his fate," Richard Armitage's Thorin Oakenshield says to Ian McKellen's Gandalf The Grey about Martin Freeman's diminutive Bilbo Baggins in the latest trailer for Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." Hey, I have a great idea, let's bring a small hobbit on a perilous journey that he may not survive!

Get your wallets out kids, because after hints at Comic-Con and reports emerging last week that serious talks were underway between Peter Jackson and Warner Bros., it looks like Middle Earth is going to be up on the big screen for the next three years. That's right, "The Hobbit: Subtitle To Be Determind Later" (aka Part 3) is gonna happen. Here's what Jackson had to say on Facebook:

As big fans of your work all the way back to "Bad Taste" (in fact, of your work, the only film we're not fond of is "The Lovely Bones," and let's face it, every filmmaker gets a misfire at some point), we wanted to drop you a line after hearing about some recent events. Like many film fans, we're looking forward to your return to Middle Earth, with the first of your two-part adaptation of "The Hobbit," when it comes to theaters in December.

Can you blame Warner Bros.? "The Dark Knight Rises" puts Batman to bed for the next few years, and aside from "Man of Steel" next summer, the studio doesn't have any more comic book movies until at least 2015. In 2013, Superman aside, they have a guaranteed hit in "The Hangover Part III," but everything else? It could be argued it's up in the air.

To say the Comic-Con crowd is a little excited about the long-awaited release of the first “The Hobbit” movie this holiday season would be the understatement of the century. Saturday morning’s Hall H line was quite possibly the longest in the convention’s history, which could be attributed partially to other big guns such as “Django Unchained” and “Man of Steel,” but it’s hard to imagine the legendarily loyal Tolkien faithful didn’t play the biggest part in the mob scene.
