The Humbling
What are you doing this long, Labor Day weekend? Having a BBQ, marathoning some of Bill Hader's 200 movies every comedy writer should see, or perhaps you're putting your feet up and taking a breather before school kicks in. Well, if you happen to be by a pool, perhaps you'll relate to his new clip from "The Humbling," premiering at the Venice Film Festival this week.

The Humbling
On paper, "The Humbling" has a lot going for it. The film is based on the book by acclaimed author Philip Roth, is led by acting legend Al Pacino and rising star Greta Gerwig, and promises a provocative, sexually charged drama. But the question is whether or not director Barry Levinson will be able to pull it off, and the first clip is here to see if he's got the chops to deliver.

The Playlist's 10 Most Anticipated Films Of The 2014 Venice Film Festival
Last week we ran down our 20 Most Anticipated Films of the fall season, excluding those that only have festival berths planned and no wider releases as yet. But this week, the Venice Film Festival kicks off, initiating the first phase of the fall festival season, which runs into the tiny but mighty Telluride and the huge but also mighty Toronto International Film Festival. After that, everyone catches their breath for a couple of weeks before launching back into the fray for the New York Film Festival, which overlaps a little with the BFI London Film Festival, before AFI Fest takes us into mid-November and we all start to fret about the holidays.

The Humbling
Al Pacino has become a mainstay at the Venice Film Festival in recent years. The actor/director debuted his “Wild Salome” film at the fest in 2011 —with Jessica Chastain before she became famous— and this year, he'll be a dominant presence once again. Pacino will star in two films at Venice 2014, one in competition, David Gordon Green’s “Manglehorn,” and one out of competition, Barry Levinson’s “The Humbling.”

Venice 2014
It feels like film festival announcements get earlier and earlier every year. There's still a week of July left, and we've already had major announcements from TIFF, NYFF and even London and Tokyo (which don't happen until November, and will be opening with "The Imitation Game" and "Big Hero 6" respectively). But before any of those arrive, we've got the 71st Venice Film Festival, and after unveiling their big-ticket opener with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Birdman," the rest of the line-up for the official competition was announced in Rome this morning.

The Humbling
...and so begins the chaos of the fall festival season. With TIFF announcing their first wave of titles this morning, now all eyes are on the teases, pics and trailers that will be coming like slow wave over the coming weeks and months. And so here we go...

The Humbling
Do not adjust your sets, this has not become a theater news site. Earlier this year, we were startled to remind ourselves that way back in 2011, Al Pacino and Barry Levinson announced that they'd be reteaming (off the back of HBO film “You Don't Know Jack”) to film a version of Philip Roth's novel “The Humbling,” as adapted by Buck Henry, screenwriter of ”The Graduate”). In February we learned that Greta Gerwig was joining the cast as—and this plot might come as a shock if you've never read any Philip Roth, in which case lucky you—a sexually adventurous young woman who ends up getting together with an older man (Pacino) of famed artistic ability.

The Humbling Al Pacino Greta Gerwig
Okay, nearly three years ago, word first surfaced that Al Pacino was looking to reteam with Barry Levinson for an adaptation of Philip Roth's "The Humbling." And that was pretty much the last we heard of it, but somewhere along the way, filming started and this thing was cast cast so either credit a secretive production or apologies for sleeping on this one.

Levinson Talks Prospect Of Helming Mob Epic 'Gotti: Three Generations'For someone who's almost incontestably one of the greatest living American novelists (there will always be naysayers...) Philip Roth has never fared well on the big screen. "Goodbye, Columbus is mostly forgotten, but fairly decent, but "Portnoy's Complaint," "The Human Stain" and "Elegy" (an adaptation of "The Dying Animal") were all disasters of varying degrees, despite excellent source material. But Hollywood ain't done with Roth yet, with news breaking that a veteran director and star, fresh off a recent success together, are joining forces again to adapt a recent work from the author.
