Well, here's something we haven't really seen before from Lasse Hallström. The director, who has mostly been coasting on edgeless, forgettable, feel good fare for the past decade or longer ("Dear John," "Salmon Fishing In Yemen," "Hachi: A Dog's Tale," "The Hoax" etc.) has shifted gears considerably, getting behind the camera for the thriller "The Hypnotist," his first Swedish language film in 24 years.

It's possible you may have not noticed it, but three-time Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallstrom has become an immensely prolific director. Though he was Miramax's go-to guy in the late nineties and early aughts, that company's significantly lower profile led to him moving in another direction. But he rebounded with a flourish, scoring his second biggest hit with the Nicolas Sparks' adaptation "Dear John", and now he's back with the romantic comedy "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen".

It’s an age-old story: Directors establish themselves abroad, then Hollywood's doors swing wide and virtually no one is impervious to her lucrative charms. More often than not, they’re chewed up and spit out (George Sluizer, Oliver Hirschbiegel) or they flourish and slowly but surely lose their original aesthetic (Paul Verhoeven).

Arthouse fans maybe recognize him recently from the excellent “Everlasting Moments” or for his turn in Susanne Bier‘s Oscar winning “In a Better World,” but Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt is poised for global recognition as the shape-shifting Beorn in Peter Jackson's forthcoming "The Hobbit" films. But he won't stray too far from his bread and butter just yet as he's lined up a role in director Lasse Hallström's first Swedish film in 24 years.

We've already expounded on the career of diminishing returns from director Lasse Hallström, but perhaps a trip back to his native Sweden for his first film in twenty four years will be the creative rejuvenation he needs.
