The Immigrant
“I thought there was something very beautiful about exploring a melodrama from a female protagonist's perspective because all of a sudden I would be free from the constraints of, what I would call, macho posturing, male behavior and get straight to the emotional heart of it,” director James Gray said last fall of his upcoming drama “The Immigrant,” which stars Marion Cotillard.

The Immigrant
"... restrained, thoughtful filmmaking that satisfies on nearly every level" is how we described James Gray's "The Immigrant" out of the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, but due to the whims and caprices of Harvey Weinstein, the film has been held until 2014. With the picture now playing internationally there is no shortage of promo material popping up, and today we round up the latest batch.

Magic, prostitution, immigration and the American Dream—not exactly the most obvious ingredients to mix together, but James Gray has done just that with "The Immigrant." His look at the experience and hardship of traveling through Ellis Island in the early 1900s forms the basis of his new movie, one that is opening overseas after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this year. For those of us eager to see the movie for ourselves, this new clip will have to suffice for now.

The Immigrant
Nope, sorry, James Gray's "The Immigrant" still remains without a firm U.S. release date so we'll just have to look overseas with envy as France gets ready to unveil the movie in their cinemas soon. And if there is one international language that all films speak, it's marketing and so with that in mind, a new clip from the movie has arrived.

'The Immigrant,' 'The Zero Theorem,' 'Like Father Like Son' & More Headed To Marrakech International Film Festival

The Immigrant
With a jury headed by Martin Scorsese and including Faith Akin, Patricia Clarkson, Marion Cotillard, Amat Escalante, Golshifteh Farahani, Anurag Kashyap, Narjiss Nejjar, Park Chan-wook and Paolo Sorrentino and with masterclasses conducted by Bruno Dumont, James Gray, Abbas Kiarostami, Nicolas Winding Refn and Régis Debray, the Marrakech Flim Festival certainly isn't slouching when it comes to attracting big name talent. And effort extends to the official lineup of the festival. Read More »

The Immigrant
It's been slow going for James Gray's period epic "The Immigrant." The film, which stars Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner, debuted at this year's Cannes Film Festival, where it was up for the Palme d'Or (it lost to "Blue is the Warmest Color"), but since then there hasn't been much news. The Weinstein Company is scheduled to handle domestic distribution, but didn't schedule the lengthy historical drama for awards consideration (some have speculated that the film will go directly to On Demand services) and aside from a few festival presentations, remains largely unseen. Thankfully a November release date is still planned for France, which has provided us with the first-ever trailer for the film (via Elle).

6 Movies Pushed Into 2014
Movies are dropping like flies from the Oscar season this year. Or rather, that seems to be the conventional wisdom out there as a handful of pictures have moved out of the awards season, switched dates or been punted into 2014. And you’ve heard time and time again that it’s a crowded season this fall and winter. And it is, but it’s really no more crowded than any other year -- this prestige season is always busy and there are always casualties and movement. Sure, the Oscar landscape is changing, and there’s been seismic shifts under our feet. George Clooney’s “Monuments Men” is now landing in February, what everyone thought was a surefire Oscar nominee in “Foxcatcher” has moved to unknown lands in 2014 and several other pictures thought to be 2013 Academy contenders have also adjusted plans.

51st New York Film Festival Wrap-Up
The 51st New York Film Festival is quickly coming to a close and it’s frankly taken us a little by surprise how fast its ended (this is also a way to say, damn, we’re still a little behind on some reviews). But it has been an excellent festival, so like Oli's more contemporaneous BFI London Film Festival diaries, I wanted to recap what I've seen so far. While there was no secret screening—director Kent Jones' dream of bringing Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf Of Wall Street" to the fest were squashed when Scorsese fell behind in his editing—this year's festival was still one of NYFF's best.

Joaquin Phoenix, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Renner, under the guidance of James Gray, is pretty much all the reason you need to see the forthcoming "The Immigrant." But that it's an accomplished film too, one that finds Gray stretching the boundaries of his personal style of filmmaking, is an equally exciting prospect.

Though we're still awaiting a firm date from Radius TWC for their planned spring 2014 release of James Gray's "The Immigrant," over in France the film is gearing up to hit cinemas this month. And that means plenty of new looks at the movie well in advance of when many of us over here will get a chance to see it, which willl definitely hold us for now.
