As we transition into the unofficial start of autumn, the films take on a similarly seasonal tone, ranging from somber to bleak. Larceny, inebriation, lechery, and gore pepper this weekend’s releases, creating a veritable smorgasbord of tributes to deadly sinning. There’s also the odd comedy, sure, but even they seem to have dipped into the dark debauchery bucket for inspiration. But don’t fret too much, friends: if you’re starting to feel SADD, there’s always the IMAX/3D rerelease of your favorite childhood action flick to patron. Enjoy!

Those who have no experience with the UK series “The Inbetweeners” will be glad to know that, like this critic, if you have no prior familiarity with the characters from the series (or the MTV spinoff) , then its film spin-off “The Inbetweeners Movie” (or plain old "The Inbetweeners" on its U.S. release, which starts this Friday) will still make perfect sense. Though one does wonder how you get a series that seems to be about the UK’s declining school system, and the sociopath malcontents that somehow are permitted to graduate, on the air. Surely “The Inbetweeners” is a show about the bureaucratic struggles of an overtaxed school board dealing with the foulest, most obnoxious, sex-obsessed deviant jerk teenagers of England’s suburban middle class, which makes the movie, a lighter affair, seem like a brief respite. This must be the case.

While it remains to be seen if American audiences will take a shine to the Brit comedy smash "The Inbetweeners Movie" when it lands on our shores next month, or if the MTV remake of the hit show that spawned it will find the teenage audience it's looking for, it seems plans are afoot for a sequel.

So, let's straighten this all out. First there was the BBC hit comedy show "The Inbetweeners," about four young lads who are interested in the kinds of things young lads are usually interested in: alcohol and sex. The show gained a strong following, but no one could have predicted that the "The Inbetweeners Movie" -- released last year and coming to the U.S. in September -- would become the highest growing comedy in the U.K. of all time. And of course, a remake came knocking, with MTV set to unspool the Americanized version of the show in August (get a first look here). But wait, there's more.

It hit U.K. cinemas last summer and went on to become the third highest grossing film of the year in that territory, with a staggering $71 million take at the domestic box office (placing behind only “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part Two)” and “The King’s Speech” in 2011). It wasn’t a Hollywood blockbuster, but rather the big-screen spin-off of a smutty teen comedy, which had aired just 18 half-hour episodes on a niche British TV Channel, E4. “The Inbetweeners Movie” was a surprise success to say the least, and on September 7th it will be time to see whether U.S. audiences react as positively to the four lads who embark on a holiday filled with “sun, sea, sex, booze, sex, minge, fanny and tits...and booze...and sex.”

Last year, in a banner year for the British box office, there was one success story that proved more surprising than any others. A film that, despite costing a fraction of the competition, outearned "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," "The Hangover Part II," "Transformers 3" and "Sherlock Holmes 2," and doubled the grosses of films like "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," "Fast Five" and "Cars 2," becoming one of the most successful British comedies in history. That film was "The Inbetweeners Movie," a big-screen version of the popular TV teen comedy (which airs on BBC America in the U.S), and a year on, it's finally coming to the U.S.

It's all about the cash. If you had told us last year that "The Inbetweeners," based on the Brit teen sitcom, would get a theatrical release in the U.S. we would have said you were crazy. But proving to be a huge smash hit in its native U.K. spending a staggering four weeks at the top of the box office after it opened, Wrekin Hill is looking to see if bring some of that success to this side of the ocean.

Eighteen months or so ago, the British film industry, which relies heavily on states subsidy through money from the National Lottery, was thrown into turmoil when the new coalition government, led by Prime Minister David Cameron, announced that they were shutting down the UK Film Council, the organization that, among other things, was responsible for the allocation of funding for development and production. Those responsibilites were shifted to the British Film Institute, but many in the industry were fearful what changes were still to come.

Even if you're someone who follows the box office closely, there's one phenomenon that's likely to have escaped you. "The Inbetweeners Movie," the relatively-inexpensive big-screen adaptation of the cult British teen sitcom, opened four weeks ago in the U.K, and has become an absolute box office monster, taking a bigger opening than any film this year other than "Harry Potter," and has currently taken £39 million at the U.K. box office, and looks likely to overtake "The King's Speech" for a place in the all-time top 20 grossers.

It's hard enough to keep up with TV shows on this side of the pond, so you'll to forgive us not catching up with the Brit comedy "The Inbetweeners," a popular sitcom that follows the juvenile exploits of four hapless adolescents in their last two years of high school, usually involving them trying to get laid in some capacity. And while the show -- according our U.K. writers -- is a pleasant enough blend of raunch and heart, the trailer for the upcoming big screen version certainly plays its hand a bit more broadly, so we've been a bit wary. That said, we do have another interest in the film, namely the soundtrack.
