Box Office: ‘The Purge’ Surges With $36 Million; ‘The Internship’ Doesn’t Get Hired

The dystopian horror-thriller “The Purge” is destined to gross roughly $36.4 million domestically for its opening weekend ($16.7 million dollars from the opening night alone) and has become the surprise hit of the summer, with The Hollywood Reporter dubbing it the “Box Office Shocker.” Not only is “The Purge” in the top spot over some should-have-been-tough competition (we saw this coming), the film is also whupping said competition, making nearly over 3 times per screen as “The Internship.”

The studios have been busy, it seems, preparing for this first June weekend. The bevy of comedies, thrillers, adaptations, docs, and psycho killer little girl stories landing at the multiplexes and art houses are like a big neon sign that reads, "SUMMERTIME!" And really, what says summer better than a movie about interning? (We're talking to you, college students.) Maybe one about a 12-hour period of sanctioned lawlessness? (That's for all those who remember when summer was actually a vacation.) Whatever hearkens the season best, there is so much on the release slate today, you may need a to-do list to make it through the titles. And we'd love to know which films will make your top slots, so clue us in using the comments section below!

The Vince Vaughn brand maybe isn’t “in trouble” per se, but it’s not doing that great either. How so? Well, “The Internship” opens this weekend and it’s a big, broad comedy co-starring Vaughn and another relatively big comedy star Owen Wilson. Keep in mind, “Wedding Crashers” from 2004 that starred Vaughn and Wilson is the 4th highest R-rated comedy of all time domestically ($209 million) behind two ‘Hangover’ movies and “Ted," and it’s the 10th highest grossing R-rated movie domestically ever. That’s not anything to sneeze at.

This weekend's broad new studio comedy "The Internship" (our review) concerns a couple of schlubs (former wedding crashers Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson) who, finding themselves out of work and hopelessly outdated when it comes to modern technology, apply to become interns at Google. While there, the movie becomes something of a workplace comedy – one in which all of their coworkers are way younger, cuter, and more brilliant.

It’s hard to believe that after 2005’s “Wedding Crashers,” Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn waited eight years to team up again (especially given that they were offered countless re-up options after that R-rated comedy surprisingly soared to almost $210 million domestically). Anyway, they're back together for “The Internship” of all movies; a watered-down PG-13 version of these same characters -- it really might as well be them only almost a decade later -- only this time older, more obsolete and jobless. It’s “Google Crashers” minus the piquant humor (for the most part anyhow) right down to the same rapport and character archetypes the two shared in the original ‘Crashers.’

So, will "The Internship" be a comedic look at the issue of unemployment gripping the country, another jaunt for Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, or perhaps both? The aim seems to be to hit that middle sweet spot, and four clips and a brand new featurette are here to give you another taste of the movie before it hits theaters on Friday.

Making a movie at Google’s headquarters featuring a plot that’s largely centered around Google probably has its share of perks. One of which would be the extra (free?) online advertising from two of top three most popular websites on the internet, including the Google-owned YouTube, of course. Now that “The Internship” will be out everywhere in theaters in just two weeks, an amusing little short film featuring Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, and Ben Schwartz (Jean-Ralphio from “Parks and Recreation”) has popped up on the site for YouTube Comedy Week, and it’s definitely not an advertisement for “The Internship.” Except of course it totally is.

As much as we're hoping that "The Internship" will be a guilty comedy pleasure this summer, the news that it's coming with a PG-13 rating is a bit of bummer. While director Shawn Levy told Collider that they had also shot R-rated versions of jokes and gags (presumably for a future unrated home video edition), we think going PG-13 into theaters is a bit of an ill-advised move here. Who wants to go see Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in a sanitized comedy, when they delivered a smash R-rated hit with "Wedding Crashers"? And with stuff like "Bridesmaids" and of course "The Hangover" proving to be mega-hits with the R stamp, why not let the F-bombs fly?

I'm going to Cannes next month, yet I'm also looking forward to "The Internship." Such are the contradictions in life. Sometimes you just want to sit back and watch two old pros, and good pals, just get up on the big screen and riff and jazz with comic lines all over the place. Will it win any awards? Nope. Will it be a dumb movie with some enjoyable turns from Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson? Frankly, it it does that, it will meet my highest expectation.

There are times, on this very site, when we cry out for originality, for Hollywood to stop lazily packaging movies and shoveling them into the marketplace. This is not one of those times. Yes, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson have made this movie a half dozen times already, but whatever, we'll gladly watch one more.
