Ever since his run as the governor of California ended, people have speculated about the future of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career. There were rumors of a return to the “Terminator” franchise as well as the long-gestating World War II film “With Wings As Eagles.” But while he’s set to return later this month in the sequel “The Expendables 2,” we’re more excited by his role in the new film from “I Saw The Devil” and “The Good The Bad The Weird” director Kim Jee-woon, “The Last Stand.”

After early supporting roles in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "The Color of Money," "Platoon," "Stakeout" and "Good Morning, Vietnam," Forest Whitaker finally landed a leading role, winning Best Actor at Cannes in the process, in 1988's "Bird" the biopic of jazz legend Charlie Parker directed by Clint Eastwood. Nearly 25-years-on, it looks like the actor-director is finally returning to another jazz icon, stepping behind the camera this time, although enlisting the help of his old collaborator on the film.

With cameras now rolling, looks like there was one more part to cast in Arnold Schwarzenegger's "The Last Stand." Genesis Rodriguez may not be a familiar name just yet, but 2012 should change that. She raised eyebrows earlier in the year, appearing frequently undressed in the trailer for "Man On A Ledge," and with roles in the Will Ferrell comedy "Casa de mi Padre" and "What To Expect When You're Expecting." Her profile is set to rocket to those who haven't kept up with her travails on the Spanish language dramas "Doña Bárbara" and "Prisionera."

Harry Dean Stanton Also JoinsEven at 64 years old, Arnold Schwarzenegger is still capable of surprises -- and we're not just talking about bastard children. The action star's career has pretty much been one blockbuster movie after another to varying degrees of success but he's certainly never done something like "The Last Stand." A modestly budgeted quasi-western, with a gaggle of character actors in supporting roles, all in a film marking the Hollywood debut by a foreign filmmaker, in this case, “I Saw the Devil” helmer Kim Ji-woon. We're definitely curious and now that production is officially underway, a few more names have joined the genuinely random, sort of WTF cast.

Frankly, we could do without another "The Terminator" movie even though Arnold Schwarzenegger still really wants to make one, but stuff like "The Last Stand" is really the sort of movies he should be making now. Low key, gritty and backed by the envelope pushing "I Saw The Devil" helmer Kim Ji-woon, this is the kind of fare will put his bastard child ways behind him, not some bloated "final" entry in a franchise that should have ended a long time ago. Anyway, this a long way of saying that Sif from "Thor" (aka Jaimie Alexander), and that guy from "Friday Night Lights" (aka Zach Gilford) are gonna back up the Governator in his next film.

So, can Arnold Schwarzenegger put his philandering, baby-making ways behind him and make a big screen comeback? He's certainly going to try. Next summer, he'll star alongside a bunch of other aging 'roid-heads in "The Expendables 2," but his first post-gubernatorial leading man vehicle will come in the form of the B-movie thriller "The Last Stand." And it's already amassing some strong talent to back him.
