Steven Soderbergh has always been one of director David Gordon Green’s models for an ideal career path, and it’s a perplexing thought that the two filmmakers previously haven’t secured a reason to collaborate. They came close—Green’s adaptation of “A Confederacy of Dunces" promised Soderbergh as producer, before the film collapsed under studio politics—but now a prime opportunity has finally arrived, thanks to the heads over at Amazon Studios.

After his self-assured feature film debut—2000’s “George Washington”—few could have predicted the twists and turns that David Gordon Green’s filmography has taken. Working at a furiously fast pace, just when you think you've got him pegged, he confounds once more. Don’t let him make a remake of the horror “Suspiria”? Fine, he’ll go shoot “Prince Avalanche” in secret with some friends and announce it after it’s done. Expect him to make more studio comedies a la “The Sitter”? He’ll bang out two indie dramas in a row practically back to back—“Joe” starring Nicolas Cage which Roadside Attractions will release on April 11th of this year (trailer here) and “Manglehorn” starring Al Pacino which should hit the festival circuit later this fall.
