Well, you can't have the best of the year without the worst, and while Cahiers Du Cinema got the ball rolling on the top films of the year, Time Magazine has dropped their rundown of the worst. And topping it all? The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's "Cloud Atlas."

Who’s hungry? “The Hunger Games” proceeded to predictably beat the stuffing out of the box office, scoring $155 million, the third-highest opening weekend in history, and highest for a non-sequel. The fan base came out in full force, no doubt, but so did the normals, as the books don’t (yet) have nearly the support of “Harry Potter” or “Twilight.” But make no mistake, this property had a similar groundswell of opinion, including an ad blitz and news and web coverage suggesting this was the “good” version of those pre-existing properties. Within three days, Lionsgate has their highest grossing domestic release of all time, and Hollywood’s strongest new franchise. Because everyone secretly loves child murder.

It really doesn’t matter how popular a show was back in the day - as long as it’s a vaguely recognizable title with a good cast, you’re guaranteed a certain level of results. “SWAT” lasted only one year, memorable mostly for its theme song, and yet the movie version grabbed $37 million back in the summer of 2003. Nine years later, a similar opening has greeted “21 Jump Street,” the television show of which ran for four forgettable years in the late '80s and is more famous for spawning megastar Johnny Depp than for having any great story lines or standout moments.

There's no real joy in reporting on a massive bomb. Mostly because, why hate? Usually the participants involved will cry into piles of hundred dollar bills why you return to your menial workday job, gloating seems like a waste of energy. It's especially disconcerting when it comes from someone like Andrew Stanton, who previously directed "Wall-E" and was making his transition to live-action with the uber-expensive "John Carter." Analysts have been predicting doom for a long time now, in a way fueling the negative buzz with their irresponsible reporting, leading to a soft opening only slightly surpasses similar boys-n-sand actioner "Prince Of Persia," and that's mostly due to 3D prices.

After a brutal year at the box office in 2011, with many seemingly sure-fire things underperforming, the studios have been breathing a sigh of relief in 2012 so far. For each of the nine weekends of 2012 so far, takings at U.S. theaters have been significantly higher than the equivalent weekendsin previous years, and two movies, "The Vow" and "Safe House," have already crossed the psychologically vital $100 million barrier, with "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" a dead cert to join them by the end of next weekend.

Will Smith, Steven Spielberg, Nicolas Sparks, Tyler Perry – to these foolproof brands, add one more: the late Dr. Seuss. “The Grinch,” “The Cat in The Hat“ and “Horton Hears a Who” have all grossed over $100 million, and now, opening with stronger numbers than the three of them is “The Lorax.” The environmentally-minded ‘toon, which ironically has helped market SUVs, is the third effort from Illumination Entertainment, and it looks very likely to outgross the openings of both “Despicable Me” and “Hop.” Industry expectations pegged this as a huge opener, as it was a notably deflated market with no animated blockbusters since last winter’s mostly well-received “Puss-In-Boots.” In other words, duh.

Have we all recovered from the Oscars? I'm still steamed about Billy Crystal's blackface, but really, it's the horrible, groan-inducing jokes that were the most offensive of all. I just like to fantasize about the Tilda/Charlize/Fassbender crazy Oscar party they must have had together. That would be the place to watch! But now it's March, so awards season is over, and we must move on to new and greener pastures. You know what they say about March, in like a "Lorax" out like a lamb. Right? Something like that. This weekend, "The Lorax" ushers in spring with a little ecology lesson, and "Project X" ushers in SPRING BREAK, WOO! We've also got curiosity "Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie," somehow being released in theaters, Jafar Panahi's house arrest doc "This Is Not A Film" and plenty of other selections in our First Weekend of March Cornucopia.

Review: 'The Lorax' Is Cute But Weighed Down By Its Faithfulness To The Source Material

Adapting a children's book, especially one as beloved (and brief) as Dr. Seuss' gentle eco-fable "The Lorax," is an unenviable task. There's a sliver of narrative that must be expanded, padded, and teased out, while an attempt must be made to maintain all of the things that people love about Dr. Seuss (nee Theodor Geisel) and his books – the sing-songy rhythm, the loop-de-loop design work, the easy surrealism. In short: it's kind of a bitch. Or a snitch. Or a sliver-de-glitch. But the good folks at Illumination Entertainment (who made a surprise hit out of the decidedly under-the-radar "Despicable Me") have done a respectable job bringing "The Lorax" to the screen. It's just a shame that the fidelity to the source material, on both narrative and design levels, seems to have taken the steam out of something that could have been truly special.

The greatest advertising opportunity of the year aka the Super Bowl, is over, and one highly priced team of players beat another highly priced team of players. But as always, it's the ads everyone is talking about anyway, and this year, Hollywood dropped a bunch of cash hoping to lure football lovers to theaters over the next few months.

In the last four years, Chris Meledandri has carved out quite a remarkable niche for himself and his company, Illumination Entertainment, becoming one of the most reliable hitmakers in animated entertainment, using his experiences at Walt Disney Pictures and 20th Century Fox Animation to make box office home runs out of “Despicable Me” and “Hop” for Universal Pictures. His latest project, ”Dr. Seuss' The Lorax,” brings him back to his days at Fox, where he supervised “Horton Hears A Who,” and creates another vivid, exciting Dr. Seuss adaptation in collaboration with directors Chris Renaud and Kyle Balda.
