You already know that the road of Dr. Seuss projects to the big screen is littered with carcasses ("The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" and "Cat In The Hat" in particular) but on the animated front, things have fared a bit better. "Horton Hears A Who" was respectful in its star studded approach, and the makers behind "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax" (not really sure the author's name needs to be in the title, but we digress) are hoping they too can do the same. And for the most part, they have.

While we're always wary of childhood favorites coming to the big screen, 20th Century Fox's recent "Horton Hears A Who!" seems to have at least gotten the spirit and playfulness of the Dr. Seuss' book down. Now Universal are going to give it a whirl with "The Lorax" and they too seem to be coming at it from the right angle.

Adapting the carefully calibrated, imaginative and uniquely original worlds and characters created by Dr. Seuss is no easy feat, and the live action incarnations “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “The Cat and the Hat” are the exact definition of how to do it wrong. But on the animated side, the writer's tales have fared much better. Of course, on the small screen, the animated 'Grinch' is a classic and a yearly ritual during the holiday season while "Horton Hears a Who!" from a few years back did Seuss some reasonable justice. Well, the team behind that film are back with "Dr. Seuss' The Lorax," and while the purists may take umbrage, it's hard to find fault here.

Unfortunately for legendary author Theodor Geisel, or Dr. Suess, as he is so lovingly known, his classic children’s books have never properly been adapted to film. With two live action blockbusters, “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” and “The Cat and the Hat,” ruining both the message and ambiguity of Suess’ best work, it looks as if animation was the only way to turn in order for Hollywood studios to continually plunder the author’s goldmine of an imagination.

You can feel that sweet, homespun, wholesomeness from here. And it's kind of nauseating.
