Almost as anticipated as Paul Thomas Anderson's 'The Master" in general -- and given that only this morning, this writer got a death threat for daring to give the film a 'B,' that's pretty damn anticipated -- is the music of the film. 2007's "There Will Be Blood" saw Anderson draft Radiohead member Jonny Greenwood to write the score, and the result was a masterpiece: a dischordant, hugely exciting soundtrack that proved to be one of the most memorable of the century so far. And Greenwood's back for the director's follow up, his brilliant (but in our opinion, flawed) period drama starring Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Don't call it a comeback, he's been here for years. Joaquin Phoenix has been appearing on screen for nearly three decades, initially under the name Leaf, but really came to attention in 1995 in Gus Van Sant's "To Die For," a film that really put him on the map. And across the next decade and a bit, in everything from blockbusters "Gladiator" and "Signs" to his hugely impressive collaborations with James Gray on "The Yards," "We Own The Night" and "Two Lovers," Phoenix steadily revealed himself as one of the most talented and committed actors of his generation.

Update: Well, now it's a little clearer what Mann was talking about -- according to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, the jury wanted to give "The Master" the Golden Lion as well, but were told that they couldn't give one film more than two major awards. After some deliberation, it was decided to give "Pieta" the top prize, and "The Master" the two others. It all sounds like a bit of a clusterfuck, frankly, but it's not going to hurt the film's Oscar chances one bit...

As we write this, we're somewhere over the Alps, flying back to London after an exhausting, rewarding week at the Venice Film Festival. Meanwhile, our editor-in-chief just returned from the mountains after an equally busy weekend at the Telluride Film Festival. Festival season is only just getting underway, with TIFF kicking off as we speak, and Venice doesn't wrap up til Saturday. But even so, it's true that the first salvo of the awards race have been fired in both Italy and Colorado, so it seems like a good time to run down which films have found themselves in a promising position after the last ten days or so, and which fizzled as soon as they arrived.

At times it seemed like it would never happen, but "The Master" is almost (finally) here. Paul Thomas Anderson's long-in-the-works pseudo-Scientology story, starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joquain Phoenix, is set to hit theaters in limited release on September 14th (following a string of secret screenings and an official world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and an appearance at TIFF). In anticipation of the film's release, the usually cagey Anderson is on the press circuit, and in a lengthy and fascinating interview with the Village Voice, talks about how he single handedly created the marketing for the movie and what it was like working with the sometimes controversial Harvey Weinstein.

Since it was first announced back in 2009, Paul Thomas Anderson's latest has been one of the most highly anticipated films over the past few years among cinephiles. For two years, production on the project that would come to be known as "The Master" was shrouded in secrecy. In fact, Anderson who hasn't made a film since 2007's "There Will Be Blood," didn't speak a single word about the project publicly until just weeks ago. And cast/crew were also told to keep mum on details. But the veil has finally been lifted this as "The Master" had its official debut in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
