In the era of reboots and remakes, if an attempt to bring back a franchise fails, it's cool because you can just try again a few years later. Of even if it was successful, you can still reboot it, even if the next incarnation is a total disappointment (see "The Amazing Spider-Man"). And so it goes with Universal, who four years ago dropped the troubled "Wolfman" into theatres and watched it sink like a stone. So they're giving it another kick at the can and have hired two dudes who know how to make blockbusters of varying quality, but consistent box office.

As logic dictates, if "Insidious" made $97 million worldwide, and "Insidious 2" made $161 million worldwide, a third film should follow. Plans were announced last fall, though director James Wan announced he had moved from the horror genre as a director. But a filmmaker has been found, and it won't surprise who you it is.

Universal Pictures and their new partners at Legendary Pictures (they said "see ya later" to Warner Bros. this year after “Pacific Rim”) have unveiled a quintet of release dates for their 2015/2016 season. Let’s get right to it. The first and perhaps most disappointing news is that Michael Mann’s untitled project (a cybercrime thriller set in Hong Kong starring Chris Hemsworth) has been dated for January 16, 2015. January is a crappy date, so it sucks, right? Well, for one, we’ll see if that date sticks, for two, Ron Howard’s Hemsworth-starring “In The Heart of The Sea” opens two months later and “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” is a few months after that, so perhaps the studio is just trying to strategize around those dates.

Last month, "The Mummy" reboot was put back in the coffin, so to speak, when helmer Len Wiseman, in a rare move of taste and thoughtfulness, bailed from the project citing vague "scheduling issues." Since then, word has been "mum" (ha!) on the brewing bad idea, but rest assured, Universal has found a way to keep this thing going.

The news earlier this year that Universal hired “The Hunger Games” and “Captain Phillips” writer Billy Ray to pen a new screenplay for “The Mummy” reboot, after “Prometheus” writer Jon Spaihts turned in his own separate draft, signalled perhaps that the studio still wasn't sure which direction to take. And now, the plans for the reboot are going to get more complicated for Universal as director Len Wiseman walks away from the project.

Oh, what a rollercoaster you're taking us on Universal! Last spring, with "Prometheus" still buzzing on everyone's minds, the studio snapped up that film's original writer Jon Spaihts to pen their reboot of "The Mummy." Okay, if it's gonna happen, he's a decent enough choice. And then in September, they bizarrely announced that Len Wiseman, coming off the stink of "Total Recall," was going to direct. Far from our first choice, but we get it, he can do effects stuff in his sleep. But now it seems like they're still not sure what they want to do.

Even though reviews for "Total Recall" were less than kind, and audiences at home mostly didn't care, it seems overseas is where Len Wiseman still matters. The ill advised, blandly directed and deathly dull remake pulled in less than $60 million stateside, but overseas? $114 million. Good lord. Anyway, it seems those figures are enough to convince Universal that the man who has fingers in the anonymous "Underworld" series, and dipped his toes in the "Die Hard" franchise with the largely disregarded "Live Free Or Die Hard" is the right guy to helm the all important reboot of "The Mummy."

So, what happens when you happen to be the writer who penned the most anticipated movie of the summer/year? Everyone forgets you also wrote "The Darkest Hour" and gives you a big shiny new franchise to play with. That's what's happening with Jon Spaihts, the dude who wrote the initial draft of "Prometheus" that got Ridley Scott all hot and bothered before Damon Lindelof came on and did his rewrite magic.
