Well, D23 has come and gone, and with Disney's insistence on controlling the message suffocating any spontaneity and excitement -- coupled by a distinct lack of any real news other than some details about the new Pixar films -- the event was a bit of let down. However, Disney/Pixar did let a couple more morsels spill regarding the previously announced "Toy Story" short that will precede "The Muppets."

More Photos From 'Dragon Tattoo,' 'MI4,' 'We Bought A Zoo,' 'The Muppets,' 'Breaking Dawn' & More"The Rum Diary" starring Johnny Depp has been in the can for what feels like two years now, but there's a reason for the delay apparently. ''You can't open it next to some blockbuster thing,'' Depp told EW in their Fall Film Preview issue. ''It's a special little film.'' While we've seen photos of Depp as the writer Paul Kemp who works at a Puerto Rico newspaper in the '50s-set adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's early novel, this is our first look at Amber Heard in the picture. The director is Bruce Robinson of "Withnail & I" fame? Wait, who? Exactly. Robinson hasn't directed a feature since "Jennifer Eight" in 1992, but as he told EW, "Johnny's one of the few stars who can [handpick] who they want to direct a movie." And what's one of Depp's favorite movies? Well, the debauched and depraved "Withnail & I" so there you have it. The picture also stars Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Jenkins and it hits theaters on October 28.

"Fun" is a pretty vague descriptor, an adjective that's easy to use but doesn't do much when trying to accurately capture the vibe of a film. But every now and then, there is the exception that proves the rules. For "The Muppets" the only word that can be used to describe what has been seen of the film thus far is "fun."

Yes, sometimes we're cranky, snarky and cynical but we're also big pushovers for gooey entertainment that hits the sweet spot just right, and from what we've seen of "The Muppets" so far in the multiple trailers, it is a film that is blending nostalgia, reverence for what makes those characters work and a rare, genuine sense of fun that we can't wait to be a part of.

It's not been a banner year for The Playlist's inner child. We've been spoiled in recent years, admittedly, but even the better kids flicks of the year so far, like "Rango" and "Kung Fu Panda 2," seem aimed at adults more than children, drawing on the Western and martial arts genres, but neglecting the sense of inner wonder that's so necessary, leaving "Super 8" as the only film that's really scratched that particular itch.

Say what you will about massive ad campaigns for franchise movies, but we can't remember the last time marketing for a tentpole movie was this much fun to watch. Following the rom-com style teaser and "The Hangover 2" riffing tailer for "The Muppets," a new one has landed today using this weekend's "Green Lantern" as a jumping off point.

Thanks to the two recent teaser trailers "The Muppets" looks like a total blast, capturing the vibe that made us giddy for the felt covered co-stars back when we were in short pants. The film features an all star cast (Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Rashida Jones, Chris Cooper with cameos from Emily Blunt, Ricky Gervais, Alan Arkin, Jack Black, Billy Crystal, Zach Galifianakis and more) and will be tuned up by “Flight of the Conchords” star Bret McKenzie. But it wasn't always that way. With My Morning Jacket's new album "Circuital" hitting stores today, frontman Jim James has been doing the press rounds revealing that at one time he was on track write songs for the upcoming movie, but that you can hear some of his efforts on the band's latest long player.

Can we just say that if the marketing for "The Muppets" continues to be this clever and fun, we won't mind the onslaught for one second.
