Since leaving his post as the leading man in Michael Bay's 'Transformers' trilogy, Shia LaBeouf has seemingly turned his back on blockbusters and made some admirable choices to work with names like Oliver Stone, John Hillcoat and Robert Redford with a teaming with the Danish king of controversy Lars von Trier also in the works. Another project that the actor has recently finished shooting is "The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman," the feature debut of commerical director Fredrik Bond.

Producers Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger have built up a helluva CV over the years, with their names gracing films like "Little Miss Sunshine," "Cold Mountain," "King of the Hill," "Chuck & Buck" and Alexander Payne's upcoming "Nebraska." With their latest effort, "Ruby Sparks," now in theaters, Thompson On Hollywood recently caught up with the pair, and they provided an update on a handful of projects they have in the works, including one which has gained a helmer coming off a summer blockbuster.

“The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman” is a film that this writer reported on last week and incurred the wrath of many a commenter by expressing reservations over the casting of Rupert Grint. Well, you won’t find any reservations about this latest bit of casting (or about Grint again – hell hath no fury like a 'Potter' fan scorned) as Aubrey Plaza confirmed to Latino Review that she's joined the cast, alongside Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood, Til Schweiger, Mads Mikkelsen and Melissa Leo. Mia Wasikowska has signed on to star in John Curran’s (“The Painted Veil”) new indie “Tracks.” The film will tell the true story of a young woman named Robyn Davidson who traveled 1678 miles through the Australian desert in 1987. It’s an Australian production and will be based on Davidson’s memoirs of the same name, and has already secured distribution down under and in the U.K. (through Momentum Pictures)

Now that he's exited the "Transformers" franchise, Shia LaBeouf is trying to carve out a new reputation as a respectable, adult lead. He's had hits outside the toy-based series with films like "Disturbia," but the actor's clearly after a little more respect, and he's been making some smart choices of late, with John Hillcoat's "Lawless," which premieres this weekend at Cannes, and Robert Redford's "The Company You Keep" among his upcoming projects.

It seems the return of Shia LaBeouf to "The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman" has kicked the movie back into motion. The actor originally joined back in 2010 and was later replaced by Zac Efron, but last month LaBeouf climbed back into the lead less than two weeks later, and two more actors have come aboard with a start date on the horizon.

Movie projects sometimes have strange, curious lives, going through casting changes and riding the tides created by the pulse of the industry in an effort to get made. And the upcoming "The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman" is a good example of that. The 2007 Black List script by Matt Drake ("Project X") first found a star in Shia LaBeouf way back in 2010, but nearly a year passed, and a new brunette hunk in Zac Efron was attached to the lead. Well, almost 365 days have passed since then, and the project is right back in LaBeouf's lap.

Commercial director Frederik Bond has been patiently awaiting the opportunity to make his feature film debut. At various times he's been attached to direct the comc book adaptation "Hack/Slash," the remake of Bong Joon-ho's "The Host" and most recently, the sci-fi flick "Year 12."
