The Snubs & Surprises Of the 2014 Emmy Awards
Don't expect a swift response to any communication sent to someone who works in the TV industry: last night was the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards (see the list of winners here), and the parties were going on long into the night. As we said this morning, "Breaking Bad," "Modern Family" and "Sherlock" were the big winners, with Bryan Cranston, Julianna Marguiles, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jim Parsons, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jessica Lange taking the leading actor trophies, and Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Ty Burrell, Allison Janney, Martin Freeman and Kathy Bates winning prizes for supporting roles.

The Normal Heart
First staged off Broadway in 1985, Larry Kramer's acclaimed play "The Normal Heart" is undoubtedly a product of its time. Written and performed during the early stages of the 1980s AIDS crisis, a period which saw the gay community gripped by fear of the emerging disease, and ravaged by a shocking death toll, Kramer's work is searing indictment of governmental indifference and those who refused to fight unreservedly to get the necessary resources and funding to foster support groups and research. Kramer's play was also autobiographical, drawing on real-life people as inspiration for the characters, with the end product something as personal as it was polemical. More than 25 years later, "The Normal Heart" was revived on Broadway in 2011, and now it comes to HBO in a star-studded movie adaptation, with an aspiration towards the same fury the material evoked decades ago. But unfortunately, that passion oddly leaves the movie feeling a bit out of time in 2014.

The Normal Heart
Okay, so "The Normal Heart" didn't make the Cannes Film Festival lineup like I figured it would, but that doesn't mean we're not putting this one on our watch list for next month. A new trailer is here to remind you why you might want to tune into HBO in May to watch something other than "Game Of Thrones."

The Normal Heart Mark Ruffalo Taylor Kitsch
We'll know in a few days if our prediction that "The Normal Heart" will be hitting the Cannes Film Festival is accurate, but until then, a new teaser for the HBO film is here.

The Normal Heart
With a sequel already planned, HBO is showing a lot of confidence in Ryan Murphy's upcoming feature-length drama, "The Normal Heart." And who could blame them? The cast alone is pretty first rate with Mark Ruffalo, Julia Roberts, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch and Jim Parsons all on board, the story is stirring, and so far, it looks like it'll be the highlight on the network this spring, certainly as evidenced by this new teaser trailer.

The Normal Heart Mark Ruffalo Taylor Kitsch
Over the past couple years, HBO has been a quiet-but-steady presence at the Cannes Film Festival, where they unspool their movies out of competition (with Steven Soderbergh's "Behind The Candelabra" an exception in 2013). "Hemingway & Gellhorn," "Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight," "Seduced And Abandoned"—those are the movies that have joined Soderbergh's in walking the red carpet in the south of France. And while nothing is official, we'd lay down some good money that the same will happen for "The Normal Heart." But even if not, you won't have to wait long to see this one for yourself.

The Normal Heart Mark Ruffalo Taylor Kitsch
This time last year we were all writing articles about the impending death of cinema at the hands of TV, with modern masters like Steven Soderbergh running off to HBO and the like to make “adventurous” work like “Behind the Candelabra” (which did well at the Golden Globes last night) that film producers apparently wouldn't touch (Soderbergh had previously said major studios considered the material "too gay"). Then 2013 happened, a bunch of great movies came out (including “Dallas Buyers Club,” which also did well last night and which kind of spiked the argument that movie studios wouldn't touch the gay stuff) and everyone calmed down.

Even though we've seen films like “Milk” and “Brokeback Mountain” succeed with audiences, studios are still wary of gay-leaning movies. Just ask Steven Soderbergh, who was told by major studios that "Behind The Candelabra" was "too gay" before he found at home for it at HBO.

Perhaps further evidence that big studios are staying away from dramas like the plague, "The Normal Heart" has been kicking around for the past few years in slow development. At one point, Brad Pitt's Plan B shingle was involved, and almost exactly one year ago, the cast -- which has long had Mark Ruffalo attached to lead -- was rounded out by Julia Roberts and Matt Bomer and then...nothing. But now the project has a new home and a firm start date.

Having conquered television with "Glee," it looks like the show's creator Ryan Murphy is gunning for equal big screen success, and he's assembled a helluva cast to bring the Tony award-winning, criticially acclaimed "The Normal Heart" to the big screen. Already in the works with Mark Ruffalo attached way back in the summer of 2010, the project picked up more steam when Brad Pitt took it under the wing of his Plan B shingle last year. And now it has brought some major talent on board.
