The One I Love, Duplass, Moss
At first blush, "The One I Love" appears to be just the latest standard operating relationship dramedy to pass through Sundance. But while the relationship at the center of the film is the engine that drives the narrative, there are much more mysterious things going on under the hood. The film centers on Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elisabeth Moss), a couple currently experiencing a rough patch in their marriage. We meet them mid-therapy session in couples counseling, where we learn that Ethan has made a transgression that Sophie isn’t quite ready to forgive. So far, any attempts to rekindle the magic have gone poorly, as evidenced by Ethan’s botched attempt at recreating their first date. On that aforementioned first evening out together, the pair snuck into a stranger’s swimming pool, believing him not to be home, but quickly discovering the opposite and dashing from the property. This time the owner really isn’t home, and so they just float there as a listless, bitter reminder of just how far they’ve come from that early romance.

10 Films To See In August
So, another year, another month of August to end the summer movie season with a whimper, amirite? Perhaps, but we here at The Playlist took the tagline to “American Beauty,” way back in 1999, to heart… look closer. There’s still plenty of McMovies to clog your cinematic arteries, but sometimes, those blockbusters are tasty. And if you step outside of the multiplex, there are plenty more movies that give you a more healthy, balanced cinematic diet.

The One I Love
While the going-away-for-the-weekend-to-save-the-relationship trope is a well worn one, it's taken to new places in "The One I Love." And outside of that, with both "Mad Men" star Elisabeth Moss and Mark Duplass in the lead roles, we'd probably watch this no matter what.

An unexpected mix of thespians -- Elisabeth Moss, Mark Duplass, and Ted Danson have signed on to star in a new indie entitled “The One I Love,” from first-time feature director Charlie McDowell and first-time feature scribe Justin Lader. Moss and Duplass will play a married couple with relationship issues, while Danson will play their therapist. Duplass will also be executive producing, once again flexing his multi-hyphenate muscles.
