When it first began, many, many years ago, The Playlist covered film in general, but with a particular focus on the places where movies intersected with music -- scores, soundtracks, music videos et al. And while our remit has grown over time, it's still something we take a particular interest in. After all, it's hard to think of major movies in which music doesn't play a key part, from a piece of score elevating a key sequence to a pop song that becomes inextricably linked with a film until the end of time.

Awards season continues on apace, and if things keep on the way things have been going this week, Kathryn Bigelow may need to enlarge her trophy cabinet. Her follow-up to the awards-laden "The Hurt Locker," Bin Laden-hunt picture "Zero Dark Thirty" hasn't even opened in theaters yet, but it already won the Best Film (along with Director and Cinematography) prize from the New York Film Critics' Circle on Monday, and now the National Board of Review (the somewhat nebulous organization who traditionally kicked off awards season, before the NYFCC moved their dates up last year) have followed suit.

For those of you keeping track, it’s Back-to-School Night, Part Deux at the cinemas this weekend. First stop, Sociology, where you’ll note the detailed study on how high school experiences impact the rest of one’s life. Biology is next, and a presentation on teen pregnancy. Then you’ll proceed to baseball in Gym, advanced studies in mise en place in Home Ec, and creating a video game OR filming a porno in Technology. In an unrelated note, there are also lots of cops on screen.

Teenagers have generally not been well served by the movies. Folks like Cameron Crowe, John Hughes and Judd Apatow aside, adolescent life is usually positioned around the goals of having sex, partying and getting into outlandish hijinks with little-to-no actual insight into how teenagers think or feel. In fact, it has been a long time since we've really had a movie that got it right, but delivering beyond expectations, "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower" is about as authentic as it gets, bringing a fresh, funny and moving look at the ups and downs of friendship and family in high school.

With the Toronto International Film Festival in full swing up north, clips are being dropped left and right for a bunch of films that are playing there. Just today we got brand new clips from highly anticipated literary adaptation "The Perks of Being a Wallflower;" drama "A Late Quartet" with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken and Catherine Keener; and the bizarre-sounding Colin Firth/Emily Blunt comedy/drama "Arthur Newman." Additionally, a trailer has debuted for family drama "Jackie," starring Carice van Houten ("Game of Thrones") and Holly Hunter.
