The success of director Gareth Evans action-heavy thriller “The Raid: Redemption” has been kind to both the filmmaker and his aspirations of completing a proposed trilogy of films. And though Evans will be “Breaking The Bank” with Universal and kicking up dust all over again with “The Raid” sequel “Berandal,” he probably didn’t expect to see a claymation recreation of his film featuring cats.

Consider this a matchup of brands moreso than movies. "The Hunger Games" ruled the roost for the third straight weekend, the new millennial hit beating back two 90's sensations with ease, almost suggesting a passing of the torch. Young people will always like sweeping romance and bawdy sex, but for this weekend, it was all about that popular pastime of child-on-child murder.

After much hype and love from the festival circuit, "The Raid: Redemption" begins rolling out into theaters this weekend. And while we saw the film at Sundance and called it a "triumph" not everyone at The Playlist office felt the same way. So here's a different take on the pulse pounding action flick.

Few films at this year's SXSW Film Festival have knocked us back in our seat like Gareth Evans' assaultive "The Raid: Redemption." Opening later this month, it's a slickly realized, breathlessly paced actioner about an unlucky SWAT team that invades an apartment building that is more or less exclusively populated with very bad dudes. (A kind of warlord/drug kingpin resides in one of the top floors.) Appealing to the typical SXSW audience's love of extreme violence and foreign weirdness, the movie went over like gangbusters. We got to sit down and talk with the film's director, the very British Gareth Evans, about where the movie came from, what we can expect from the sequel, and being saddled with that goofy subtitle. And as an added bonus we also get to hear from the film's composers – Mike Shinoda (from Linkin Park) and Joseph Trapanese (the man chiefly responsible for wrangling Daft Punk's "TRON Legacy" score). Guest stars!

The buzz for Gareth Evans' movie "The Raid" has become deafening following its screening at Sundance, where we called it, "A triumph of kicks, punches & unrelenting thrills.” Well not only is more ass-kicking on the way in a planned sequel entitled “Berandal,” but it looks as if Sony is getting back in the 'Raid' game.
