Awards season gets underway this week. We're sorry. We know it's August. But it's a fact—the premiere of "Gravity" on Wednesday at Venice is only the first in a veritable tsunami of Oscar contenders that will be unveiled on the Lido, with more unspooling at Telluride, TIFF and NYFF over the next six weeks or so. By the beginning of October, we'll have a much better sense of how the season will be looking (although some of these films have started screening already—we've seen a couple, though are embargoed for the moment).

Fresh off his well-received, Matthew Goode-led drama "The Burning Man," helmer Jonathan Teplitzky has set up his biggest project yet with the adaptation of Eric Lomax's prisoner-of-war retribution tale "The Railway Man" starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman (who replaced a suddenly busy Rachel Weisz) and Jeremy Irvine ("War Horse"). Production has now kicked off in Scotland with two more familiar faces in Stellan Skarsgård and Hiroyuki Sanada ("The Last Samurai") rounding out the film's cast.

After a year of fairly tough work, dealing with infidelity and depression in "The Deep Blue Sea", U.N. corruption in "The Whistleblower," and forgetting to turn down roles in "360" and "Dream House," the next year or so sees Rachel Weisz heading to tentpole territory for the first time since 2005's "Constantine." She's got a key role alongside Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton and co. in Tony Gilroy's "The Bourne Legacy" arriving in the summer, while early 2013 sees her join Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams as one of a triumvirate of witches in Sam Raimi's "Oz The Great and Powerful."
