Plus Glimpses Of 'Contraband,' 'The Raven' & 'Immortals'After a mixed summer ("Fast Five" and "Bridesmaids" performed well over expectations, "Cowboys and Aliens" well under them), it's interesting to see where Universal goEs from here, considering recent changes in management and all. They've got a fairly strong commercial line-up heading into the end of 2011 and the start of 2012, and gave punters a first look at many of those films in London's O2 arena as part of the Empire Big Screen event.

Comic-Con '11: John Cusack Says 'The Raven' "An Art Movie And A Popcorn Movie" Rolled Into One

As you already know by now, we've been kind of cautiously optimistic about "The Raven." Directed by "V For Vendetta" and "Ninja Assassin" helmer James McTeigue and starring John Cusack, Luke Evans, Brendan Gleeson and Alice Eve, the film takes a interesting twist on the life of poet Edgar Allan Poe (Cusack), pitching the famed writer into a serial killer thriller which features Poe teaming up with a detective (Evans) to track down a murderer who mimics his work, in the last week of the writer’s life. In addition to ripping his books for ideas on how to kill people, the murderer will also kidnap Cusack’s fiancee played by Eve.

Get Inked With The Poster For 'The Raven'

You know what? We're starting to get a good vibe about "The Raven." If you had told us that we'd be getting excited about a movie centering on a fictionalized Edgar Allan Poe hunting a serial killer, we would have called you crazy, but we've liked what we've seen so far. The first images have revealed a far more intense period feel than say the decidedly more carefree "Sherlock Holmes" and now an official poster with its highly stylized look has definitely piqued our interest.

'The Dark Knight Rises,' 'Man Of Steel' & More Skip Comic-Con As Major Studios Stay Away This Year

Warner Bros, DreamWorks, Disney & The Weinstein Company Pass On San Diego; Marvel On The FenceThe comic/geek crowd are either the most important group to court for genre films or their influence is overstated; it really depends on who you ask. In recent years, the very vocal contingent has generally been thought of as essential to making sure more challenging or niche fare finds an audience or least makes its budget back, but a series of disappointments and flops have the studios reconsidering. Last year, Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" was met with widespread geek acclaim only for the Universal film to sputter at the box office (though to be fair, the marketing for that film did little to embrace anybody outside the core of fans). "Sucker Punch" got major buzz and died on the vine this past spring, while "Tron: Legacy" played modestly despite nerds flipping for footage that Disney teased as early as 2008 (though yes, it has done enough to convince the studio get a sequel moving). And both "Skyline" and "Let Me In" faltered when they hit screens later in the year, after doing the San Diego Comic-Con rounds.

Sundance '11: Paramount Gets 'Like Crazy' With Anton Yelchin & Felicity Jones, 'Margin Call' Sold

'Project Nim,' 'Tabloid,' 'The Raven,' 'There Be Dragons' & 'Tanner Hall' All Picked Up In Busy Week Of AcquisitionsThe attitude coming out of Sundance this year is overwhelmingly positive, with many critics already swooning over quirky films like Miranda July’s “The Future” and Elizabeth Olsen’s performance in Sean Durkin’s “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” But though there’s been a lot of praise during the first three days of the indie festival, the first film to truly wow viewers (and buyers, apparently) is Drake Doremus’ “Like Crazy,” a film about long-distance lovers trying to make it through. It’s apparently so wonderful that just a day after its premiere, Paramount Pictures has snatched it up for U.S. distribution, with production company Indian Paintbrush co-producing, according to those close to the deal. The film has been one we've been keeping a close eye on for a while, and was already listed as one of our most anticipated of the year and the positive buzz now coming out of Park City has only stoked our curiosity further.

So we're going to show our age a little here, but we never actually met Edgar Allen Poe. By all accounts, he was a pretty exciting dude, an accomplished writer and practitioner of cosmology and cryptography. Perhaps Sylvester Stallone, an older gentleman, knew Poe well (trained at the same gyms?), motivating him to spend years trying to adapt his life into a movie starring Robert Downey Jr.
