Leonardo DiCaprio will star in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film “The Revenant”
Even though we were a little bummed by the word that Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman" won't be premiering at Cannes, another piece of news has buoyed our spirits. You may have forgotten, but way back in 2011, Iñárritu was attached to direct "The Revenant" with Leonardo DiCaprio slated to star (Sean Penn was also linked). Not much else was heard after that, but the project is now fully back on.

As another summer comes to a close, we can look back at all the fare this mega blockbuster season has brought us while finishing off with a few more popcorn flicks. Nothing so big as “The Expendables 2,” mind you, but still plenty of big name stars and CGI to look forward to this weekend. So with Labor Day just around the corner, take some time to bask in the last rays of August sun as you bike along the Hudson River or drive across the country in your convertible. Or, for those who’ve had enough UV rays for this year, board yourself up in a haunted house with a zombie or two. There’s plenty of fun to be had in this last summer go-round.

Review: 'The Revenant' Is A Topical Horror-Lover's Dream

The point of using horror films as allegory, political or otherwise, is twofold. There are the obvious benefits of allegorizing, which allow you to disguise your intentions using coded language, cinematic or otherwise. And then there’s the genre sledgehammer, which comes down with righteous anger, coating the topic in sticky gore, surrounding it with stacks of disembodied heads, and, for those who aren’t squeamish, illuminating the filmmaker’s point of view by rendering it actively unpleasant, and therefore impossible to ignore. In this fashion, few could have predicted that one of the most vital films about our post-9/11 occupation of the Middle East would be Kerry Prior’s inventive, disgusting, and unsettling “The Revenant.”

Circa last summer, Sean Penn was one of the actors (along with Leonardo DiCaprio) that were interested and circling an Alejandro González Iñárritu project called, "The Revenant" (good pedigree around this tale of survival for an 1820s fur trapper mauled by a bear; John Hillcoat and Christian Bale were a duo once interested in it as well).

It looks like the wheels are turning on the next film by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Late this summer it was announced the helmer behind “Amores Perros,” “21 Grams,” “Babel” and "Biutiful" was setting up his next picture, "The Revenant." Well, it now has backing and two major Hollywood stars are now looking to star.

After failed iterations of the project that featured Park Chan-wook and Samuel L. Jackson and another version with John Hillcoat and Christian Bale, Warner Bros.' adaptation of Michael Punke's period revenge-actioner "The Revenant" has now found itself another top notch director.
