Okay, so the "Rum Diary" wasn't a big hit and frankly, wasn't a very good movie either. All the promise of a sun soaked Hunter S. Thompson surrogate in Johnny Depp was wasted with a narrative that went nowhere in a movie that is really only notable for Amber Heard looking great in it. But the music was pretty top shelf, and in fact, it seems to have been so good that a second soundtrack album is on the way.

Opening up on 3,952 screens DreamWorks Animation’s 3D "Puss In Boots," a spin-off of the popular and lucrative "Shrek" series, was always going to do well. Even critics were on board this time (an 81% RT score), including our own positive Playlist review. However, competing with Halloween and Halloween parties is tough. Add on top of that an unexpected winter squall hitting the East Coast this weekend and numbers were much lower than any “Shrek” picture so far. But everything’s relative, even the seemingly low “Puss In Boots” $34 million opening set a Halloween weekend record, besting the $33.6 million record that “Saw III” set in 2006.

Um, WHAT? There is no horror movie opening this weekend. WHO WILL FILL THE SAW VOID??? I know we got “Paranormal Activity 3” last weekend, but it is decidedly abnormal for no big budget horror to be opening on October goddamn 28th. Are we on the decline of a cycle? Is everyone getting their yayas out at those horrible haunted house places? Think piece coming soon! In the meantime, check out our foreign horror feature for all your cinematic creepy crawlies. And, if you’re not in the Halloween spirit, here are some other films for you to enjoy: the long awaited “The Rum Diary”! “Puss in Boots,” for the children. And time as money movie “In Time” with lots of pretty humans.

'Pirates Of The Caribbean 5' Apparently Aiming To Start Production In Summer 2012It's easy to forget what a roll of the dice Marvel took in casting Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in "Iron Man." At the time, the actor was still best known for his checkered and controversial past, and the studio was concerned about attaching Robert Downey Jr. to one of their centerpiece franchises as any bad behaviour would put not only the box office into jeopardy, but sequels, licensing opportunities and more. And while Johnny Depp certainly isn't a bad boy, it's that kind of thinking that still dominates the executives overseeing lucrative, four-quadrant franchises, and they will do anything to protect the wholesome, family image that has allowed them to print money.

Release Includes Score By Christopher Young, Plus Cuts From Dean Martin & Patti SmithHey, you know a movie that we keep forgetting is coming out soon? "The Rum Diary." The long-in-the-works adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's book, which sees Johnny Depp return to the part of the author, which he previously played in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," is slightly over two weeks from release, but, having skipped the festival circuit entirely (not a particularly good sign...), the publicity machine has been fairly quiet for Bruce Robinson's film, considering it stars the planet's biggest movie star.

Back when the trailer dropped for "The Rum Diary," this writer (who has not read the book on which the film is based) got pilloried for daring to suggest that the boozy, Caribbean vacay vibe felt less adventurous than Terry Gilliam's "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas." "It’s way different than fear and loathing," our commenters said with folks arguing, "These stories are two different galaxies" and that "nothing really happens in the book other than him going to South America, trying to keep a paper from going under eating alot of cheesburgers and of course drinking alot of rum." Ok, we'll grant that the story is different and comparing "Withnail & I" director Bruce Robinson's film to Gilliam's isn't fair. But we will say this, no matter what is actually contained in the book, the marketing folks behind the movie want you to believe Johnny Depp is gonna get wrecked.

One film that has been curiously absent from the festival circuit in 2011 thus far is Bruce Robinson's long-awaited "The Rum Diary." It won't be in Venice, Toronto or New York and while Telluride or London are possibilities with the release date coming up in October, it seems FilmDistrict have been more busy building the buzz around "Drive." Well, the first trailer has arrived and it seems indicate why this movie has been flying somewhat under the radar.
