The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
When the first trailer arrived for "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty" this past summer, it took many by surprise. Ben Stiller's remake of Danny Kaye's 1947 musical fantasy looked like it had it's own unique magic, one that got many talking about its Oscar potential. This past weekend, that theory got tested as 'Mitty' made its world premiere at the New York Film Festival to decidedly mixed reviews, and far from the sort of raves that would sustain a picture through the awards season. That being said, there is still a long haul to go and Fox isn't stopping yet.

"The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
“I remember my first conversation [with writer Steve Conrad] where he said, 'Every American male yearns to be on the cover of a Wheaties box,' ” says John Goldwyn, the producer of “The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty.” Speaking with the New York Film Festival crowd, he helped present the film’s world premiere over the weekend (our review), though it was a long time coming. The fantasy film, based on the 1939 short story by James Thurber, runs in the family: it was Goldwyn’s grandfather Samuel Goldwyn who produced the original 1947 Danny Kaye adaptation, and had worked to bring a newer incarnation to the big screen.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
In a colorless and unremarkable New York apartment, the shy, anonymous Walter Mitty stares at the eHarmony dating page of his co-worker Cheryl (Kristen Wiig). Debating whether or not to make the online first move, Walter eventually daydreams about a spectacular manner in which to impress her. But back in reality, the question remains: can the timid man send the social networking equivalent of a hello to the girl he has a crush on? If he does have the chutzpah to do so, will the complexities of life and fate manage to interfere? Will Walter be able to seize the day and “just do it” like Nike might have asserted him to do a few decades ago? (Bear with me.)

The 2013 awards season race is so tight that even Harvey Weinstein is breaking a little bit of a sweat. He's already moved his "Grace Of Monaco" out of the way, while last week came the bummer piece of news that Bennett Miller's excellent looking "Foxcatcher" was also being pushed to 2014, with both films choosing to wait to get it right rather than rush to finish to make a release a date. But the latter picture moving has meant a bit of turmoil for AFI Fest, who were going to premiere the film this year, but they've found a worthy replacement.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
It looks like Fox is treating the New York Film Festival as a lucky charm, and why not? Last year, the festival provided the world premiere for Ang Lee's "Life Of Pi," which went on to earn 11 Oscar nominations, resulting in 4 wins including Best Director. And clearly, the studio has high hopes for "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty."

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
When word came down that Ben Stiller was remaking Danny Kaye's 1947 musical fantasy "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty," we figured the story — in which a man escapes into his daydreams — was a setup for another "Night At The Museum"-esque jaunt. But, we certainly weren't expecting this...

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty Ben Stiller
We're just a few years shy of the 70th anniversary of Danny Kaye's "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty," and while some might deem it sacrilege to even attempt to remake the classic fantasy, some would argue the story is due for a contemporary makeover. And of those people would be Ben Stiller, who directs and stars in this holiday season's big blockbuster, and Fox is beginning to show a little bit more of what they have in store for audiences.

In case you missed the news, Ben Stiller is directing and starring in the remake of the 1947 Danny Kaye-vehicle "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty," the somewhat liberal adaptation of the masterful James Thurber short story. The project will somehow also involve Sean Penn so it's fairly safe to assume that this won't be your ordinary do-over, no surprises that the first image is a little bit of a headscratcher.

Ironically, some of us were just having this conversation this morning. Would 20th Century Fox rush its "X-Men: First Class" sequel into production like they did in 2010 for its 2011 release (there was about an eight-month window to shoot and edit the picture and the film suffered because of it, but miraculously wasn't a total disaster)? The answer, thankfully, is no. Fox has set July 18, 2014 as the release date for their untitled sequel to "X-Men: First Class." Original director Matthew Vaughn will be on board once again with all of the original cast, including Micheal Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and many more (they all signed multi-picture deals after all). That should give them plenty of time to write a proper screenplay and not a mediocre one that the cast has to elevate (which was the case with the original).

What The What? Sean Penn Joins Ben Stiller In 'The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty'

Sean Penn doesn't do comedy. Wait, let's rephrase that...Sean Penn doesn't do comedy often. Of course, there's "Fast Times At Ridgemont High," and he's lent his incredible talents to comic vehicles only a handful of times in such films as "We're No Angels," "What Just Happened" and "Shanghai Surprise." But he's not above doing funny stuff. In fact, you may recall for that for the longest time he was attached/linked to an earlier incarnation of The Farrelly Brothers' "The Three Stooges" (and he likely dodged a bullet) and he's also guested on Zach Galifianakis' "Between Two Ferns" (watch below). But a role in a remake of a classic film with Ben Stiller? Yeah, we didn't see this one coming either.
